An internal investigation into the forced clearance of racial justice demonstrators in Washington, DC, was not influenced by former President Donald Trump’s plan to be photographed outside the church while holding a Bible.
The report released Wednesday by the Interior Departments inspector general concluded that protesters were cleared by U.S. Park Police (USPP) on June 1 to start a contractor installing the new fence.
Trump was widely criticized for what seemed to be a forceful clearing of demonstrators using pepper pellets and flash-bangs 30 minutes before he was photographed in front of St Johns Church, near the White House.

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who is white, was convicted of murder in April.
Inspector General Mark Lee Greenblatt said in a statement that the USPP already had plans to clean up the area and began implementing the operational plan several hours before they learned of a potential President’s visit to the park.
Trump, who was deplatformed on Twitter, Facebook and other social media outlets following the Jan. 6 uprising attempted to stop a joint session of Congress from confirming President Joe Bidens ’success to keep in office. Trump, issued a statement celebrating the report.

However, it appears that officials in the Trump administration have tried to convince authorities to clear the area. The report documents Trump’s lawyer, William Barr, urged commanders shortly before pushing to clean up protesters because of Trump, but was removed.
The report includes testimony from an unnamed USPP operations commander: The Attorney General asked him, These people will still come here when POTUS [President of the United States] go out? The USPP operations commander told us he didn’t know until then that the President would be coming out of the White House and into Lafayette Park.

The report found that the decision to clean up the protesters was justified, but law enforcement agencies at the scene failed to effectively communicate with each other and failed to convey warnings to the protesters about the impending scramble. .
Several different law enforcement agencies moved ahead of schedule and began contacting protesters before the protesters were adequately warned.
The report details how on June 1, a team from the Bureau of Prisons that late arrived at the scene, did not receive a full briefing and used peppercorns on the protesters contrary to the commanders ’instructions of the USPP incident.
The conclusions, which deny any political influence in the decisions and cite cloud-of-war confusion for any wrongdoing, are likely to be removed insufficiently by critics of last summer’s scramble.
The new report focuses on the USPP’s decision-making, which is under the Department of the Interior, and the complex interactions with various law enforcement entities, including the Secret Service and the Metropolitan Police Department.
It was pointed out that the USPP and the Secret Service did not use a shared radio channel to communicate and pointed out that communication and coordination weaknesses may have contributed to the confusion during the operation.
Lafayette Park was the DC nexus of last year’s national wave of racial justice protests that were once violent.
Trump and his administration cracked down on protests across the U.S., including a series of abductions by demonstrators by federal authorities in Portland, Oregon.
Much of the criticism of the clearing, and accusations of political influence, came from the decision to move before the 7 pm curfew set by Mayor Muriel Bowser. The push surprised protesters and criticized it as unnecessary confrontation after two nights of clashes and property damage.
The report concluded that USPP commanders viewed the curfew as irrelevant. It cited an incident commander saying, We are not enforcing the Mayors curfew. Is a Federal entity. We do not work directly for the Mayor.
Continuing commanders at the scene did not believe the protesters were following the Mayors ’curfew order on June 1 or that the wait was necessary to reduce the chaos.
