A former federal prosecutor has called for former president Donald Trump to be criminally prosecuted because he was responsible for a relentless wave of crime as president.
Speaking to MSNBC on Friday night, Glenn Kirschner urged the Justice Department to act and warned that a future fugitive criminal president could come to take over the White House if Mr. Trump is not held accountable.
Mr. Kirschner tweeted on Saturday: It is time for our country to hold a former criminal president accountable for his crimes against the United States.
Mr. Kirschner listed a number of Mr. Trump’s offenses, such as withholding military aid to Ukraine in an effort to have them investigate Joe Biden, leading to Mr. Trump’s first impeachment, and obstructing his administration of congressional proceedings.
He also cited Trump’s campaigns on financial violations, which took place before Mr. Trump took office, during which his former personal lawyer and organizer Michael Cohen was imprisoned.

There are many other offenses, Mr. Kirschner said. There are countless, inevitable deaths of Covid that I think states can pursue. Then, of course, there was a motivating uprising. We saw it with our own eyes.
If he’s not accountable, if we don’t prosecute him, then what we’re doing is we’re pushing for an open version of Donald Trump, he added. We need to prosecute today’s version of Donald Trump to send the message that we will not tolerate a runaway criminal president.
Mr. Trump may face criminal charges for activities that occurred before he became president, after he became president, and while he was president, as long as they were not part of his duties while he was president of the United States, lawyer David Weinstein told The Guardian earlier this week.
The former president has not been charged with any crime and has denied any wrongdoing on several occasions. He called the investigations into him and the Trump Organization a witch hunt.
A spokesman for the Manhattan District Attorney’s office said in the paper: We have told the Trump Organization that our investigation into the organization is no longer purely civil. We are now actively investigating the Trump Organization in a criminal capacity, along with the Manhattan DA.
Manhattan prosecutors have called a grand jury that is expected to decide whether to sue Donald Trump, other executives at his company or business itself, whether prosecutors should present to the panel the criminal cases, The Washington Post reported on late May.
Fulton County, Georgia district attorney Fani Willis said in February that there were plans to investigate Mr. Trumps’ call to state Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger.
The then president pushed Mr. Raffensperger to find enough votes to allow him to win the state in an attempt to overthrow the 2020 election. Mr. Raffensperger resisted.
But whatever the outcome in ending Mr. Trump’s legal turmoil, he is unlikely to lose the support of his ardent followers.
Francisco Pedraza, a political scientist at the University of California, told The Guardian: Most of the evidence we have on hand says that people like Trump don’t care what he does, it doesn’t matter if he breaks the law . “
We know from a lot of social science research that people who come back to Trump also register very high on proven and reliable indices of racial resentment, for example, he serves that and offers a kind of politics that responding to the taste of politics, Dr Pedraza added.
