I would like to thank Major Palm for his letter on June 6th [Community Viewpoint, Can it happen here? Yes, it can], and I hope Republicans are paying attention to the place their party represents today. A history lesson is in order. Adolf Hitler gained power in Germany by blaming German diseases on foreigners, homosexuals, and Jews. Hitlers hatred of others was wrapped up in the pretense of patriotism, delivered in long speeches full of harangue and bluster, similar to Donald Trumps America First.
I’m not afraid to say this: The Trumps Republican Party has a lot in common with Germany’s National Socialist Party the Nazis. Trump and his followers will willingly admit that they are no longer Ronald Reagan’s party and traditional Republican values. They just said they were Donald Trump’s party, and I would suggest you think carefully about what that means. That means that only white people of European ancestry are truly Americans and everything possible can be done to prevent others from voting and, in the actual words of Trump loyalists, that they have been replaced. How much worse is it? History has the answer.
A few years ago, my whole family visited the Nazi concentration camps in Dachau and Sachsenhausen. In Dachau we found shower-like nozzles for the release of toxic gas. Before it was released by American soldiers, more than 40,000 Jews, Jehovah’s Witnesses, homosexuals, Freemasons, and political prisoners died there. We saw the furnaces where their bodies were burned. It all took place right next to the neat little town of Dachau, where the locals smelled burning flesh and swept human ashes from their gardens but they did nothing.
