Mike Pompeo said he and former President Donald Trump were “tough” on Russia. Mike Pompeo on Sunday defended former President Donald Trump and his handling of Russia, saying he was proud of the work the two did during his time as secretary of state.
In an interview with “Fox News Sunday,” host Chris Wallace asked Pompeo about various human rights violations that Russia has accused.
Alexei Navalny, for example, is said to be poisoned by the Kremlin, which has repeatedly denied any involvement in the incident. Russian President Vladimir Putin once posed that Navalny had poisoned himself, an idea Navalny ridiculed.
Putin’s opponents are regularly poisoned. Novichok, the same nerve agent Navalny ate, had previously been used to poison other Kremlin dissidents. Some of Putin’s critics were killed. When asked if he would die, Putin laughed and did not answer the question directly.
“As far as human rights are concerned, we take a backseat to anyone,” Pompeo said in response to a question from Wallace about Trump’s handling of Russia. “I heard Secretary [Anthony] Blinken talked about the work they are doing to try and convince Europeans to stand by us on human rights violations in China and the work they have done to defend human rights against human rights abuses. Russia. We’re tough there too, Chris. “
“I’m proud of the work we did there,” Pompeo added. “It’s good work. It’s serious work and it makes a difference.”
Trump and Putin have a dubious close relationship that often raises eyebrows at critics and politicians. The U.S. president, for example, praised Putin and dismissed him of all accusations related to election interference in 2016, despite intelligence reports clearly affecting Russia.
And just days ago, Trump reiterated his claim that Russia would not interfere in the 2016 presidential election, adding that he trusts Russia more than U.S. intelligence.
Trump has previously dismissed allegations identifying Putin as a murderer, and he has also remained silent on Navalny’s claim that he was poisoned by the Russian president.
In the meantime, President Joe Biden has called Putin a murderer.
