ROGERSVILLE The father of 5-year-old Summer Wells, who has been missing since Tuesday, told the Times News on Friday that he believes his daughter has been arrested.
Donald Wesley Wells spoke to the Times News about the events surrounding the loss of his daughters and what was happening to him; his wife, Candus; and their three sons since Summer’s disappearance.
Summer was last seen Tuesday night at his home on Ben Hill Road in the Beech Creek community in south central Hawkins County.
Since that time there has been an enormous search effort covering the hundreds of acres surrounding the Wells residence. There was also an ongoing investigation by the Hawkins County Sheriff Office, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Wells spoke about what happened Tuesday night.

Donald Wells: I was at work, but from what my wife told me, she, and her mother, and Summer were planting flowers by her grandmother’s trailer, which was about 20 feet from the house. Really close to home. Summer, all of a sudden, Mom said I wanted to enter the house. So he said, it’s okay.
Her three brothers were inside watching TV, and Candus watched Summer enter the door. Her siblings told her to go downstairs and play with toys.
Donald Wells: His mother came in and told about Summer? Shes on the chin playing with her toys. He (Candus) hollered for her, and there was no answer. He goes down and (Summer) is nowhere. He went out the basement door. The door is not unlocked.
Summer never left the area, and Wells said he didn’t believe he was leaving.
Donald Wells: He may be in the other house. I went out there and called him. He came out from the back of the house. He just needs to be outside. Serves a kind of person on the outside. He’s gone, friend.
He said his wife called him at work in Jonesborough and he told her to hang up and call 911, and he went home immediately.
He arrived before the law was enforced, but many of his neighbors were already looking in the area around his house on Ben Hill Road.
Donald Wells: I freaked out, and when I got home I drove up to the property, and all my neighbors combed the woods for him. I realized then and there that he was gone. I knew immediately and there that he was gone. He will not leave there alone. Someone take him.
Those looking at the side of Beech Creek Road on the Sullivan County line itself about a mile from the intersection of Ben Hill Road. On Friday the search continued for 5 -year -old Summer Wells who was last seen at her home on Ben Hill Road Tuesday night.
Mr. Wells said he believes Summer was abducted and released on the spot.
Donald Wells: He didn’t leave. For one thing, we get bears, and stray dogs, and we get drugs coming into other people’s houses all night long. But it was like 5:30 pm, which made me assume someone was waiting. I heard someone say people follow kids on Facebook and look for them. All I knew was that he was definitely not anywhere around there. Someone grabbed him and took him out of the area.
Mr. Wells said law enforcement did a great job of following each lead, and he voluntarily took a lie detector test to help with the investigation. He said he and his wife were looking at photos of potential suspects.
Donald Wells: They track all kinds of people. They even let me in there with a lie detector test. It didn’t bother me to do that anyway. Parents are responsible for a lot of time.
The Wells family is a member of Kingsport Seventh Day Adventist Church in Kingsport. Wells said they love their family at church and Summer especially has many friends at church.
They just loved him until he died, he said.
Wells was originally from Utah, and he met his wife in Arkansas, where their first child was born. Candus Wells is from Wisconsin. and he had a sister who disappeared there many years ago and was never found, Wells said, though he did not know about that incident.
The Wells family moved into their Ben Hill Road residence 13 years ago to take care of his mother, who has since passed away. They inherited his house and lived there. Summer and the two youngest boys were born here.
KTN: What were you doing during the search?
Wells kids in church holding Bibles, including Summer missing since Tuesday.
Donald Wells: Just trying to cope with everything. I’m talking to the police. I can’t be alone for some reason. If I have to go there and talk to the police because I can’t be alone now.
KTN: How are the brothers in Summers?
Donald Wells: They handled it better than me and their mother. I don’t understand that. When they really think about it it is disturbing. But they better deal with it. The most Ive done is watch the news a bit. I’m not focused on anything.
KTN: Do you have any hope that it will end well?
Donald Wells: I have hope, but when you look at the statistics. Through our church and other churches, worldwide prayer is happening for her. Plus all the law enforcement agents are praying. I just hope God turns it around somehow, some miraculous way.
