The next presidential election may be more than two years away, but people are weighing who they want to run for the Republican nomination.
An early 2024 straw poll shows Governor Ron DeSantis on top, even more than former President Donald Trump.
How about running two as a pair?
“I want to see a ticket of Donald Trump, Ron Desantis,” said Doris Cortese, vice-chairman of the Lee County Republican Party.
But if he chooses, he responds quickly.
“I think my ideal would be a Ron Desantis, Kristi Noem ticket.”
He’s not the only one leaning that way. DeSantis beat Trump in a straw poll taken at the Western Conservative Summit in Denver over the weekend. The advantage is narrow at 74% to 71%, but still significant.
“Some of the never-Trump who didn’t like Trump because of the language and because of the things he said, might go back to Desantis because he’s smoother. He says the same things. But he said some of the , I don’t know if the word was subtle, but he said it in a more acceptable kind of speech, ”Cortese said.
Peter Bergerson, Ph.D., a political science professor at Florida Gulf Coast University, warns the straw poll is just a snapshot of time. Trump won a similar poll in Florida.
“I think the polls you’re seeing may reflect the exposure Governor DeSantis has shown. I think it’s really really a reflection of popularity rather than an actual reflection of policy,” he said.
But it speaks to the amount of transition the party is experiencing.
“There will be ups and downs, it’s going to be a roller coaster ride.”
Cortese strongly believes that DeSantis is the man for the job of unifying the country.
“I just came from Michigan and everyone, I said, ‘Oh, yeah, I live in Florida,’ like ‘Oh, Ron Desantis state.’
Cortese said his first goal is to reinstate the governor in 2022 before he prioritizes 2024. Neither DeSantis nor Trump has yet officially announced a run for the presidency.
While DeSantis only beat Trump by 3% in the vote, there is a big gap in the third voter: Ted Cruz.
