“SNL” and evening hosts like Jimmy Kimmel mocked Trump during his presidency. In 2019, Trump tweeted that federal agencies should investigate those shows, but a new report shows he went further. Former President Donald Trump has asked advisers and lawyers to look into how to punish “Saturday Night Live” and other night-night shows after they slam them, reported Asawin Suebsaeng of The Daily Beast and Adam Rawnsley.
Two sources told the outlet that Trump asked aides in 2019 to see what the Federal Communications Commission, U.S. courts, and the Department of Justice could do about “SNL” and other shows, such as “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”
Trump tweeted in March 2019 that he wanted federal agencies to investigate “SNL.”
“It’s really incredible that shows like Saturday Night Live, not funny / untalented, can spend all their time knocking on the same person (me), over and over, without much mention of the ‘other side,’ “he said at the time.
“Should the Federal Election Commission and / or the FCC look into this? There must be Conspiracy with the Democrats and, of course, Russia!”
The Daily Beast report is the first report that Trump has taken further action in this matter.
Sources at the outlet said Trump should have repeatedly said that the shows were annoying, meant they were protected, and Trump failed that there was no way he could woo them legally.
This will not be the first example of Trump’s attempt to use federal agencies to pursue personal dedetas while he is in office. Last week House lawmakers released emails in December 2020 showing how the Trump White House tried to arm the DOJ in an attempt to overthrow the 2020 election.
