Getty Aaron Donald responded to a tweet Tuesday morning asking where former Los Angeles Charger defender Melvin Ingram should go, given where Donald wants to see the longtime defender: With the Rams.
It looks like there’s a new addition to the Los Angeles Rams ’recruiting department.
First, Jalen Ramsey put on his recruiting record hat and sent his sales pitch to the LA Rams to Julio Jones, who graduated from Tennessee. Recently, Ramsey made a dash with disgruntled New England Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore by recruiting Pro Bowl CB via Twitter. Gilmore’s future at Foxboro is still being determined.
But now, it looks like Ramsey has company in the field of recruitment: With defender Aaron Donald.
At 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, the NFL Twitter account posted the burning question involving free agent pass rusher and former Los Angeles Charger Melvin Ingram.
Nearly seven hours later, Donald reacted to this answer:
Obviously, it was a response to the tweet with no words, but an emoji and thought Gif straight from Donald’s keyboard. However, that’s enough to give Donald regardless of the Rams running into a fellow LA star defender, plus give the league’s best defense from 2020 an extra rush charge.
What is the Current Face of the Rams’ Edge Rush Room
Donald, from his defensive tackle spot, penetrated the trenches and collected 13.5 sacks toward the 2020 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award. The next best rusher was outside linebacker Leonard Floyd, who took 10.5 sacks. He and Donald are the only Rams on the plateau double sack.
But Ram needed to replace their next two top rushers behind Donald and Floyd. Morgan Fox (six sacks) and Michael Brockers (five) were left by free agency with the Carolina Panthers and Detroit Lions, respectively.
The Rams could see a pass rushing breakthrough from fourth-year nose tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day, who spent the offseason fine tuning his arena skills. Joseph-Day has spent his career with the Rams rioting in centers and outposts while clearing space for Donald and all the other lines alongside him. A’Shawn Robinson, another trench defender who has also made his living stabbing lanes and stopping running, shed 30 pounds to lose the ball faster.
Taking a closer look at Ingram, the former first player in the 2012 draft is coming to his worst season as a pro: Zero sacks and 10 tackles in just seven games played.
However, Ingram is an enticing defender in the free agent market. If the Rams intervene following Donald’s tweet, LA will be chasing a 32-year-old defender with 49 career runs in nine seasons. And before his dismal 2020 year, Ingram made between seven to 10.5 sacks between 2015 and ’19. According to Spotrac, Ingram holds a calculated market value of $ 11.4 million.
Adding Ingram only gets the edges. The addition means a higher chance of fewer duplicate teams than Floyd and Donald in passing situations, including also allowing Joseph-Day, Robinson and anyone else on the front line to slip freely.
Another NFC West Defender is in Recruiting Mode
If the Rams try to woo a three -time Pro Bowl pick, they will have to oust an aggressive contender from their own division: Jason Verrett. The San Francisco 49ers cornerback posted this on his Twitter page:
And there’s another recruiter trying to receive a promise from Ingram. He was also a former Charger: New Las Vegas Raiders cornerback Casey Heyward.
No matter what, Donald channeled his inner Ramsey by putting on his own coordinator hat for the Rams. And if Ramsey joins the courtship soon on Twitter, it gives the Rams a 2-on-1 advantage in recruiting Ingram over other pursuers, increasing their chances of keeping Ingram at SoFi Stadium but in “Rams House.”
