Former Vice President Mike Pence on Thursday night made his most forceful attempt yet to isolate himself from his former boss, Donald J. Trump, on the issue of verifying election results in 2020 .

But for now, Mr. Pence has only tipped off the issue of how to remain a loyal soldier while distancing himself from the events of January 6th.
Speaking at the Lincoln-Reagan Dinner in Manchester, NH, this month, Mr. Pence admitted that he and Mr. Trump may not meet to look at each other about the chaos at the Capitol, stopping criticism with one look at another.
On Thursday night, he declined to say firmly that he and Mr. Trump had lost the 2020 election, a fact the former president has consistently denied.
I understand the frustration many felt about the last election, Mr. Pence said. I understand. I am on the ballot. But much more is at stake than our party or our political fate at the moment. If we lose faith in the Constitution, we will not really lose the election that the country also loses.
