Former President Donald Trump is on a revenge mission in Georgia.
After leading Republicans refused to greet the states vote in his favor, he has already inspired a major challenge with Governor Brian Kemp, and he has endorsed another against Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. Wounded by two special election losses that cost the GOP control of the Senate, he is also trying to persuade Herschel Walker a football legend in Georgia to run for the seat that will climb again in 2022.

Democrats made Georgia, formerly trustworthy conservatives, a competitive state. President Joe Bidens narrowly won there, Senate victories in January and Stacey Abrams ’close career with Kemp in 2018 played into battlefield status.

In March, when Hice launched his main bid against Raffensperger, the former president quickly endorsed him.
Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan, a Republican critical of Trump, cited parties tilt toward personality -driven politics and grievance over policy and empathy as a factor in his decision not to run for a second term in 2022.
Georgia is a small microcosm of what’s happening across the country with Republicans, Duncan told NBC News. Unfortunately we have been on the front page of the paper for 10 weeks. Certainly crosswinds and chaos will break out across the country.
To prevent this, Trump repeatedly pressured Kemp and Raffensperger to help overturn the 2020 results in the state, at one point begging the secretary of state to find him enough votes. Echoing Trumps lies that the election was stolen from him has since become a litmus test for GOP candidates looking to gain support from his right -wing followers.
In 2018, Kemp catapulted to a friendly-establishing Republican on the strength of the endorsement of former presidents. Even now, under Trump’s clear threat in the campaign against his re -election, Kemp has been careful not to oppose him further and exacerbate the situation. Exactly how far that exact revenge will go remains to be seen. He expects to hold a rally in Georgia soon.
Depending on how involved he wants to get and seems highly involved Trump could be a decisive voice in more than one race in Georgia, said a GOP operative close to Trump’s political operation.
Vernon Jones, a former state legislator and former Democrat whose former party affiliation made him a convenient Trump replacement in 2020, has launched a major bid against the governor. He said Trump would still be president if not for Kemp. His campaign manager, CJ Pearson, said Trump’s dissatisfaction with Kemp was the reason for his candidacy.
But Trump did not endorse Jones. And Corey Lewandowski, an adviser to Trump who runs one of the former super PAC presidents, hinted last week about a potentially strong new opponent.
I spoke to what I think would be a phenomenal candidate, Lewandowski said Tuesday on conservative commentator John Fredericks syndicated radio show.
Lewandowski would not identify the mystery candidate by name but called him a well -known commodity whom elected in an area that Republicans have traditionally not chosen.
Kemp entered 2021 with $ 6.3 million on hand for a re -election campaign he officially launched last month. Allies said he was committed to activating a large group of indigenous supporters across the state. When people pressured him at GOP events over his refusal to overthrow Trump’s loss, Kemp responded by telling the truth, reminding them that he followed the law and emphasizing his conservative achievements, he said. of a Republican close to the team of governors who requested anonymity to discuss a politically charged topic.
Pearson questioned Kemps ’viability without Trump behind him.

The operative close to Trump, who requested anonymity to speak frankly, predicted Walker would clean up the GOP field and force the former president and his family to invest more in Georgia. A Walker campaign would also give the party a prominent Black candidate to rival Warnock, and possibly Abrams, on top of the 2022 ticket.
Given his miss-miss in 2018 and continuing national profile as a voting rights activist, Abrams would be a formidable opponent to the Democrats if he runs for governor, as many expected. In a state where less than 12,000 votes separate Biden and Trump, his expected strength is a factor of the GOP’s top candidates and can be weighed by voters.
At the end of the day, are you Trump enough in the main? And in the general election, does that create a burden or a problem? Said Nick Everhart, a Republican media consultant who worked on the Kemps campaign in 2018.
There are early signs that the first question is more important. Activists at this month’s Georgia GOPs convention booed Kemp and voted to insult Raffensperger. But one segment of the party remains concerned about the latter.
Duncan, the governor’s outgoing lieutenant, is writing a book, due in September, outlining his plans for a GOP 2.0 to rebuild a party after Trump. He described the primaries against Kemp and Raffensperger as selfish and based solely on the desire to silence a former president sitting at his resort in Mar-a-Lago.
John Watson, an ally of Kemp and former chairman of the state party, wonders how the match will end with the Trumps grudge.
For Republicans across the country and in Georgia, if the agenda is forward looking through the windshield, I believe we have won, Watson said. If we try to drive looking in the mirror, we crash.
