Aaron Donald splits time between Los Angeles and Pittsburgh this offseason, as he does every year. He still trains every day and puts in more work than perhaps any other NFL player, but he doesn’t attend every practice and session held by the Rams before training camp.
However, while he was in Pittsburgh, he heard good things about Rok rookie Paris Ford, who was signed by LA as an undrafted free agent this year. Donald is willing to help child safety in any way he can, whether on the field or in the playbook, hopefully he will make the 53-man roster.
I already hear a lot of good things. I’m not there, but I hear a lot of good things up to how he’s done, Donald said of Ford, via John McGonigal of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. But once you put some pads on, he needs to do more and make a name for himself. But whatever I can do to help him, I’m there. He just had to come over and talk to me. If it’s the playbook or whatever I can do, I’ll definitely go there to help him. Hopefully he made the team. And I know at the end of the day what kind of football player he is. He can help us.
Ford has the ability to play both safety and corner, combining a strong career with Pitt. He put up 136 total tackles, 5.5 sacks and six defenders, returning one for a touchdown. He also split 10 passes and forced three fumbles, including nine of the PBUs coming in 2019.
The Rams could use depth in the secondary following the departures of Troy Hill and John Johnson, and while Ford is likely to play as a rookie if he makes the team, he could be active on game days if the damage occurs to other players.
Having Donald in his corner as a mentor will definitely help, but as Aaron said: It will come down to training camp when the pads go up. That will be Fords ’real opportunity to raise and showcase his skills to the coaching staff.
