WASHINGTON, July 4 (Reuters) – A social media site launched Sunday by Jason Miller, a senior adviser to former U.S. President Donald Trump, was easily hacked, and more than 500,000 people registered to use the site, Miller said.

GETTR, a Twitter-style platform with posts and trending topics, has advertised itself in Google and Apple app stores as “an unbiased social network for people around the world.” read more

“The problem was detected and sealed within minutes, and the hacker was only able to change a few user names,” Miller said in an emailed statement to Reuters.

A writer for the Salon posted screenshots on Twitter of several GETTR profiles, including former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Miller himself, which were modified to read “Here’s JubaBaghdad, follow me on twitter 🙂 “.

Asked about security on the new social media said, Miller said the situation has been “corrected.”

Miller tempts the Trump team’s plan to launch a new social media platform within months following the move by Twitter (TWTR.N) and other sites to block the former president after the Jan. 6 unrest if where his supporters attacked the Capitol.

Former Trump adviser Steve Bannon on Sunday described GETTR as a “Twitter killer” in a post on the new site.

Trump was permanently banned from Twitter and remains suspended by Facebook (FB.O) until at least 2023 and by Alphabet’s (GOOGL.O) YouTube until the company determines the risk of violence has been reduced.

Miller told Fox News earlier this week that he expects Trump to join but the former president is considering a number of options. He said Trump is not funding the platform.
