Donald Trump loves a lawsuit, and not because he’s particularly good at winning them. Like other litigious bullies, Trump likes court fights because he knows the other party is probably a normal person who doesn’t get a cheap spanking on abusing the legal system, and can be beaten or sucked up by dry of endless nuisances. But while that technique often works for silencing ex -girlfriends and hardened contractors, it’s less effective against large institutions that actually have the resources to fight, as Trump found when he foolishly thought he could be a nuisance. the government in pretending that its election in 2020 did not happen defeat.
Now, what could be a more pitiful act, Trump has accused Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, demanding that he be allowed back on their platforms so he can incite more terrorist violence by spreading lies. in the election and claims that Ashli Babbit was a martyr. Great story, bro except these companies are rich behemoths with fleets of lawyers, not two-bit operations making most of their money through tax fraud and cellphone ringtones. Plus, as noted by half of the country’s lawyers, Trump’s claims that his “free speech” rights have been violated are a joke, as his blog has proven that failed from lack of public interest, not censorship.
A social media account is not a human right, of course. But it should also be noted that there are many social media platforms that started with Trump’s existence, such as Parler, Gaband Mike Lindell’s Frank, that were all established to be a happy new home for white supremacists, QAnon lunaticsand COVID-19 denialists kicked into more established social media networks. The latest effort in that regard, Gettr, has also failed to capture the most important @realdonaldtrump account, even though the platform was literally started by a bunch of Trump hanger-ons, especially his former campaign spokesman, that Jason Miller.
The successors to this wing in mainstream social media are notoriously plagued by problems, from clashes between their funders to tech failures and poor security that plague them. Silicon Valley, not surprisingly, doesn’t send its best to work for the Pepe-meme crowd. But that’s probably not the main reason Trump would rather pursue his fruitless lawsuit than complicate his Diet Coke-sticky iPhone by posting on any of these apps.

No, this is because trolling is central to Trump’s messaging strategy. Unfortunately for Trump and his cronies, however, trolling will only work if the people you are trying to troll see your message and more critically, amplifyit. Posting offensive rubbish to Parler is the equivalent of sex trolling with a blow-up doll: The movements are the same, but you just don’t get the reactions that make the interaction worthwhile.
As I have written extensively, both in my book and here at the Salon, beyond is the main compelling force behind contemporary American rights. Under any winning arguments or valid policy ideas, modern conservatives instead focus on “liberal ownership.” The success of any right -wing pundit is not based on the sharpness of their analysis, but on their perceived success over irritating liberals. From his phony marriage to his literacy to his shameless racism, Trump could not have been better created in a lab to irritate liberals, which is the main reason for his strong popularity in the conservative base.
But liberal trolling is not the only primary source of satisfaction for the right. This is how they amplify their message.
In a recent edition of his News Box newsletter, former Barack Obama adviser Dan Pfeiffer replaced “the arming of liberal hatred in online interaction the primary Republican political strategy in the Internet Age, “because social media platforms prioritize the” most compelling posts. ” By sharing posts on the right that claim to stifle them or express liberal anger only manages to “make sure the offensive post receives more engagement and is seen by more people.”
As important as it is, liberal resentment is essential for selling bad or offensive ideas to the GOP base. Fox News ’Tucker Carlson, in particular, understands this. He rarely tries to persuade his audience to embrace his evil ideas from “replacement theory” to rejecting a COVID-19 vaccine to the nobility of a fascist outbreak on the merits, knowing full well that that is impossible. Instead, he focuses on how much liberals hate these ideas, convincing his audience to use otherwise idiotic beliefs from the pure side.
Persuading liberals is essential to selling a message to the right audiences, but for that to happen you need to reach out to liberals to inspire them. And beyond a few journalists and other professional masochists, provocative liberals are generally absent from Parler and Gettr.
We have seen this issue over and over again with right -wing figures who, by choice or by force, have tried to shift their base of social media operations into the conservative social media ghetto. In January, professional troll Dan Bonginoreact to Trump’s ban on Twitter by dramatically tweeting that it would be the “final post on this anti-American platform,” and he switched to Parler. A few months later, he quietly crawled back to Twitter and started posting again, no longer acknowledging that he had flouncedaway in righteous anger.

Other wing figures, such as Milo Yiannopoulos and Alex Jones, have seen a rapid collapse of their fortunes and profiles after being banned from the spaces where regular contact with liberals created of opportunities for reaping without reaping. Yiannopoulos set up shop on the far right social media networks, and often uses the space to gross about how these platforms don’t “drive traffic” because it’s a little private chatting with my gold star homies. “
Trump’s own “social media platform” which is just a blog folded in less than a month. It turns out that the key to his success on social media isn’t just writing half -literate missives overflowing with lies and vitriol. He needs his political enemies to retweet his content and dunkon it to excite his followers.
Which is not to say that there is no value in the right loop sites for the growing authority movement. For example, hundreds of thousands of QAnonenthusiasts have landed on the messagingplatform Telegram, where talk of violence and outright anti-Semitismhavebecome intensified. AsJared Holt, a visiting fellow researcher at the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab, told NPR in January, such a space is “an incubator for radicalization,” because extremists can beat each other without outsiders arguing back or expressing skepticism.
But that will leave the far right with a recruitment problem. Attracting everyday conservatives into more radical spaces requires attracting them in the first place. That means attracting the thing they value: the ownership of liberals. Unfortunately for them, you can’t trigger libs remotely. Which is more reason for major social media platforms to tell Trump that he can take the lawsuit and push it. He has always been free to use his First Amendment rights to whineabout it to the conservative left over Parler.
