Ben Garrison defends the Controversial Donald Trump / Don Quixote Cartoon

Ben Garrison responded to the online joke his recent cartoon ‘Donald Trump Quixote’ received by insisting that the joke made sense.

Controversial political cartoonist Ben Garrison, a popular alt-right cartoonist known for his cartoon shows about Donald Trump in which Trump is portrayed as a super-manly hero, defends himself in a recent cartoon featuring Trump appears to have not quite understood the point of Miguel de Cervantes ’novel, Don Quixote.

Garrison’s cartoon is a response to Trump’s recent lawsuit against several social media companies that banned him, claiming they violated his right to free speech (because they are private companies, Trump’s lawsuit is effectively no basis, but it gives him something he can use as a basis for some fundraising, at least). Garrison describes Trump as the brave Don Quixote, facing off against the dreaded windmills of “Big Tech.”

The issue, of course, is that Don Quixote was a delusion who convinced himself that he was a brave knight fighting evil giants when he was actually attacking the windmills he saw as giants. The scene is so famous that it still inspired a phrase, “Tilting the windmills,” to describe someone attacking creative enemies.

Normally, then, Garrison’s cartoon, as read through Don Quixote’s lens, would be a CRITIQUE of Trump, implying that he is fighting an imaginary battle, which is exactly what Trump’s critics say about the current lawsuit.

Garrison, however, argues that somehow he did not read the misreading to Don Quixote. He defended himself on Twitter, arguing, “Ok I have to speak slowly to understand leftist twits.

1. Yes, I realize that the Don Quixote character from Cervantes ’novel attacked the imaginary enemies represented by the windmill, but Donald Trump’s enemies Quixote were unthinkable. I read the book didn’t I?

2. This is a twist on a classic metaphor. Did anyone look at the cartoon that the “windmill” was running and knew he was caught. Trump charges forward as a defense of free speech by everyone including Democrats.

3. The Marxist mainstream media may condemn Trump’s lawsuit as desperation and nonsense, but it’s happening and a major lawsuit against social media leviathans is long overdue. Now censorship happens to conservatives but can / will happen to everyone if not checked.

5. And if you’re just here to troll and get your derps, that’s your choice. But don’t be surprised if I land you all James Woods. Have a Wonder America First Day! “

In other words, Garrison’s cartoon deliberately contradicts Don Quixote’s point for … reasons.

People noted that this is not the first time Garrison has made other cartoons that similarly misunderstood Don Quixote’s point, in his previous description of what he sees as conservative figure heroes like Kent Heckenlively and Robert David Steele in the role of Don Quixote and their enemies like windmills …

They are also, perhaps, “rounds in the classic metaphor.”

Garrison showed that the constant banter didn’t bother him at all by releasing a cartoon mocking his critics, with the professional cartoonist arguing, “Calm down. It’s just a cartoon.”

Garrison went on to quixotically try to convince people that he didn’t get his original cartoon wrong.
