But for Kaufmann, the guilt lies not with people who hold a hurtful outlook, but with people with temerity who don’t want to be naked with them. His solution? If you can’t set a date, legislate. And Ross Douthat and Robin Hanson proved that when access to gender is at stake, conservatives can get real socialist. What annoys these men is not the lack of opportunities for romantic discussion of marginal tax rates and destructive Medicare; it is that women can choose what they do with their bodies, and to whom they do it. Progressive authoritarianism is a new name for the same kind of fear rhetoric that drives conservative positions on access to abortion, birth control, child care, gender identity, and more, and has no academic value. jargon and economic redness can hide it.
