American democracy is under systematic attack, relentless and unprincipled. The attack was carried out by a Republican Party. It is further driven by the lies and racism of Donald Trump, who will not accept that he lost the last election.

To deny that unacceptable fact, Trump has spread and Republican officials across the country have echoed highly deceptive fraud claims to justify measures to make voting more difficult. These were passed by national legislatures and designed often surgically designed, as a federal court found in North Carolina to suppress the votes of Native Americans. Latinos and the children.

Republicans introduced voting restrictions in states across the country and 25 new restrictions were enacted.

For Republican officials, the motivation is often cynical: They believe they should persuade Donald Trump supporters to stay in office, and so they fabricate his lies, and struggle to show that they work to change voter laws. After the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965, the Department of Justice and the federal courts reviewed these laws and repealed many of them. The rightful majority in the Supreme Court, however, has been effectively disembodied by the Voting Rights Act, limiting the ability of the lower courts to protect democratic elections.

The big lie is enforced by venom and threat. Election officials who are both Republican and Democrat face death threats. In Arizona, Katie Hobbs, the democratic election official, was recently given a state security unit after being threatened for criticizing the inadequate partisan auditing taking place in Maricopa County.

As Secretary General Jena Griswold summarizes, elected officials have really accepted the use of lies to try to manipulate American voters. Lies create violence. Lies create threats.

Trump argued that the fraud occurred only in the states he lost, not in the states he won. Without evidence, he holds the provinces and cities of Atlanta, Philadelphia, Detroit, Maricopa County as cesspools of election fraud. Racism is overt and purposeful.

Observers suggest that laws such as strict voter ID requirements may have no effect. Others argue that some of the Republican reforms that make it difficult to vote a ballot without, limiting voting times to make it harder for working people to vote could actually deter Republicans as well. the Democrats.

But American history makes clear how dangerous this offense is. After the Civil War, freed slaves were given the right to vote. Discrimination based on race or credit is made unconstitutional. The coalitions of the Biracial majority were forged in many of the former slave states. Native Americans are elected to local and state offices. New progressive constitutions guaranteed the right to education, and progressive investments in schools, health and housing were passed.

The reaction of the evacuated plantation class was fierce, violent and highly edible storm. Once again, lies about corruption and fraud spread. Terrorists like the Ku Klux Klan were killed and threatened. Jim Crow laws were passed to limit the right to vote. Registrars learned how to enforce restrictions to make it nearly impossible for Native Americans to register and vote.

The South dropped to legalize apartheid which lasted nearly 100 years until a civil rights movement forced change.

If we can avoid a modern version of that reaction, action is needed now. Democrats in the Senate should unite around fundamental voting rights reforms to federal standards that will provide minimum standards for free elections and pass them, even if it requires a filibuster suspension. .

Across the country, Republicans must be taught that the amount they pay to undermine free elections is greater than any benefit they can get.

That requires corporations to demand an end to voter detention. It requires Republicans who care about Republicans to call Big Lie perpetrators and stand up against voter suppression.

More importantly, it requires key electoral disqualification targets African Americans, Latinos, young people to organize and mobilize, to increase their turnout even in the face of new barriers. In state after state, Republicans virtually guarantee that urban voters will face long lines, shorter hours, fewer voting sites. Their efforts to suppress our votes should help us spread the word of how important that vote is.

We must make those who once again seek to suppress our votes pay for the insult in the big time.

Donald Trump’s irresponsibility and the cowardice of the Republic are undermining democracy. The risk is great. If not challenged and stopped, our democracy itself is in danger from poison poisoning.

It is time for the patriots to stand up.
