WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. Superintendent Dr. Donald Fennoy that he will resign from the Palm Beach County School District this year.

In a letter to parents and staff members Tuesday, Fennoy said he will resign from Oct. 11, approximately two months after the 2021/22 academic year begins on Aug. 10.

“The decision to leave this honorable position was made after careful thought, discussion with my family, and self-reflection,” Fennoy wrote. “I am proud of the work we have done as a team over the last five years in our mutual and ongoing commitment to ensure academic excellence for our students. The past 15 months, in particular, have presented challenges, but because of our resilient and dedicated staff, we have turned challenges into opportunities for growth. “

A spokesman for the Palm Beach County School District said Fennoy will resign to spend more time with his family.

There is a clause in Fennoy’s contract that allows him to give 90 days notice if he wants to leave.

Fennoy, who became manager in 2018, helped guide the Palm Beach County School District through the major educational changes brought about by the COVID-19 plural.

The supervisor recently unveiled plans for the full return of personal instruction for the 2021/22 academic year, including optional face masks for all students and staff members within the buildings. school.

However, some members of the Palm Beach County School Board issued Fennoy’s plans, saying they were made without consulting a wide range of medical professionals.

Fennoy was hired in 2018 during turbulent and uncertain times for local schools, shortly after the deadly shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.

During Fennoy’s tenure, he oversaw major school security changes within the Palm Beach County School District, including having a school district police officer at all 179 schools in the district.

However, Fennoy’s time as supervisor did not come without controversy.

Back in September, shortly before students could return to personal instruction, the Palm Beach County Classroom Teacher Association called for Fennoy’s removal, saying union members “had lost all faith and were now there is zero confidence that going without a shipwreck is possible without immediate change. “

CTA President Justin Katz went on to insult Fennoy for a “pattern of failed leadership and lies and deception.”

Fennoy later acknowledged his communication could have been better and “stronger” about the logistics of reopening brick-and-mortar schools.

Eventually, school board members expressed their support for Fennoy, saying it wasn’t the time to review his performance because of the “heat of the moment.”
