Donald Wilgus, lived a glorious life

The lifelong resident of Sussex County, Donald Wilgus, the first born child of William Franklin and Zada ​​Catherine, passed from this world early in the morning of Monday, July 19, 2021. Always one to draw naturally of love from those who were with him, it is hard to imagine that our memories of him are enough to support us in his loss.

It is often said that he would give someone a shirt on his back; and perhaps he would, to the distress of his family. In life we ​​need money to live, but he is always the one to have a soft heart and help others as much as he can. For those who really know him, he is a patriotic American. He enthusiastically supported the cause of freedom, rather than just talking about it, like so many others who passively accept whatever happens.

Learning to drive very young in life seems to have greatly influenced his perception about cars and how enjoyable they are. Many nights William would sit outside their home next to Lord Baltimore Elementary School, waiting for Donald to return after a night of drag racing with friends. William has reason to be concerned, because in addition to racing, Donald is guilty of driving one of his fathers new Oldsmobiles on the Assawoman Canal and not letting his father know.

Many other similar activities can be attributed, but after marrying Jane Snyder in 1955 and starting a family 10 months later, the responsibilities began to catch her with a responsible husband and father. That process of maturation took a greater step forward when he accepted Jesus as his Savior, dressing himself with Jesus in baptism as explained in Galatians 3: 26-27. This response of faith motivated him to begin making decisions from a Christian perspective, for which survivors will be forever grateful.

Collaborating with his parents and siblings on the family bowling alley on Second Street in Bethany Beach, years later with his brother Gerald at Wilgus Associates, and later also having Cripple Creek Golf Course some of the avenues which he chased for life. However, his jobs only tell what he did, rather than who he was. It’s up to her children to continue to tell stories.

Donald was preceded by the death of his wife of 65 years (deducted in a month), Jane Snyder Wilgus. He and Jane are so in love can only imagine her recent death on May 29 which led to her heart attack.

Donald and Jane have three children, Gregg (Hannah Joy), D. Page, and Dawn Cordeaux (Larry). Gregg and Hannah have five children and 11 grandchildren, Dawn and Larry have two daughters and six grandchildren, and Page has two sons, giving Donald and Jane nine grandchildren and 17 great -grandson. all who feel the great loss.

Friends and family can gather Thursday, July 22, from 3 to 5 p.m. for a visit to the Ocean View Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 38040 Muddy Neck Road. A funeral service to celebrate his life will begin at 5 p.m. that day. A message of hope and promise will be shared by Gregg Wilgus.
