The Trump administration made appointments after firing several longtime members of advisory boards last year.
What’s happening: The Pentagon is expected to return five major panels focused on policy, science, business, innovation and health after Austin reviewed the recommendations of a committee that reviewed 42 departmental boards and commissions, the spokesman said John Kirby to reporters on Thursday.
“Most of the work at the committee level has been completed and we are reviewing the committee’s recommendations, the secretary is, to determine how he wants to move forward,” said Kirby, who declined to provide details about the boards beyond in five main panels.
What’s changing: The Pentagon is committed to increasing the diversity of reconstituted boards, which are filled with “old white men who are subsequent insiders in DC,” according to two former defense officials with direct knowledge in discussions. Some of the earlier members will be appointed, one of the people said.
