Why investigating Trumps alleged wrongdoing could be problematic

A rise in violent crime in the Atlanta area mayjeopardize one of the strongest investigations into the alleged misconduct of former President Donald Trump, as the local district attorney struggles to both investigate the former chief executive and discuss a “historical” backlog cases growing by the day

Fulton County DA Fani Willis has months of devoting significant resources to the Trump investigation for his campaign to pressure Georgia officials to overturn the 2020 state election results. He reportedly focused his attention especially Trump’s contact with Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, who at one point was asked to “find” enough sounds to overturn the loss of the former president to the state.

But as that investigation heats up, a backlog of more workaday cases under Willis ’jurisdiction has grown to more than 12,000, according to a report from Insider, citing public comments and interviews. to the former comrades of Willis. Much of this backlog comes from rising violent crime and state-mandated court closures because of COVID-19.

Although some sources will come in the form of belief money, that cash has strict restrictions leaving the future of his investigation into the former president in limbo.

“The problem he has is he’s in an elected position and the residents are getting tired of crime,” Michael Moore, aU.S. lawyer for the Central District of Georgia during the Obama presidency, told Insider. “So you’re going to throw all your resources here [Trump] case that could be nothing? Or will you do your job and represent the people who voted for you? “

Earlier this month Willis asked the Fulton County Board of Supervisors for more than $ 7 million in new funding for his office, which could be used to hire more staff and reduce the backlog on cases. Local reports suggest the board and its chairman, Rob Pitts, would like to consider additional funding.

It certainly doesn’t help matters that the Trump investigation is a completely unprecedented case for a county district attorney, an office with fewer resources than prosecutors at the state or federal level.

“The DA’s office has never handled something like this before in its history,” Clint Rucker, a former Fulton County district attorney, told Insider. “You’re talking about investigating a former U.S. president for some sort of irregularity related to election fraud. Nothing like that has gone through the DA’s office before.”

Although he is faced with a difficult task, a number of current and former associates with Willis say he is doing an exemplary job with the case, and they trust him to bring the investigation to a conclusion no matter what.

“If anyone qualifies to take an investigation on this scale, it’s Fani,” said Peter Odom, a former prosecutor who previously worked with Willis.
