The films of Paul Thomas Anderson, Jane Campion, Joel Coen, Guillermo del Toro, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Denis Villeneuve are laureates of 2021 AFI Award.
Honors give pre-holiday movie awards campaigns a big boost, especially since the ballots are in the hands of Critics Choice and SAG voters. Netflix led the charge on the film side with Adam McKay’s ‘Don’t Look Up’, ‘Campion’The power of the dogAnd “Tick, Tick… Boom!” all making the cut and increasing their best picture nomination chances.
Apple Original Films and Warner Bros. were next in line with two films each. Apple has landed commercials for summer audiences’ Siân Heder’s “CODA” and the William Shakespeare adaptation of “The Tragedy of Macbeth” by Joel Coen, a co-cast with A24. The latter studio has garnered mentions for a sci-fi blockbuster “DuneBy Villeneuve and the edifying sports film “King Richard” by Reinaldo Marcus Green.
Two late-December remakes, both directed by Oscar-winning filmmakers, had enough eyes in time to vote – Oscar-winning actor del Toro’s neo-noir thriller “Nightmare Alley” and musical romance “West Side Story” by Steven Spielberg.
Kenneth Branagh’s “Belfast” received a special AFI award, as internationally produced films generally do not qualify for a Top 10 list. Other films such as “Roma” and “Parasite” have also been recognized in this way in the past. The black-and-white drama will share the unique distinction with Questlove’s documentary “Summer of Soul” and Netflix’s hit South Korean series “Squid Game.”
Notable rebuffs include “Being the Ricardos” by Amazon Studios’ Aaron Sorkin, whose criticism embargo was lifted this week and debuted 65% on Rotten Tomatoes. Other films that sought boosts but are not present include “The Lost Daughter” by Maggie Gyllenhaal, “The Harder They Fall” by Jeymes Samuel as well as “House of Gucci” and “The Last Duel” by Ridley Scott .
Last year, six of the 10 films were nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, missing “Promising Young Woman” and “The Father,” although the latter was not eligible. Instead, they included “Da 5 Bloods” by Spike Lee, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” by George C. Wolfe, “One Night in Miami” by Regina King and “Soul” by Pete Docter.
HBO (and HBO Max) dominated television, with four selected shows: “Hacks”, “Mare of Easttown”, “Succession” and “The White Lotus”. Apple TV Plus won two series mentions for the musical “Schmigadoon!” and their Emmy-winning comedy “Ted Lasso”. Amazon Prime Video was able to get one last mention for Barry Jenkins’ masterful “The Underground Railroad”. At the same time, Netflix, FX, and Disney all put on a show each with “Maid,” “Reservation Dogs,” and “WandaVision,” respectively.
Launched in 2000, the American Film Institute was established to recognize films and television programs that are “deemed culturally and artistically representative of the year.”
