Rohit Shetty’s mega release Cirkus is having a tough time at the box office. Despite Ranveer Singh playing a dual role and the Christmas holidays in favor, the film failed to connect with audiences. After hitting Rs 6.50 crore on its first day, the film reportedly collected around Rs 6.50-Rs 7.25 crore on Saturday. According to the first estimates, the marginal growth of 10% will bring the total to Rs 13.25 crore.
According to a report by Bollywood Hungama, national multiplex channels showed nominal growth from day two to evening shows. He added that mass areas have already started showing a decline in collections. “The film is being rejected by audiences as the trend indicates and it will come as no surprise if it doesn’t even take advantage of the Christmas holidays on Sundays,” the report said.
Cirkus delivered Rohit Shetty’s worst opening in a decade. His latest release, Sooryavanshi, which hit theaters amid the pandemic, also opened in double digits (Rs 26.29 cr.). The 2018 version of Simmba made a bargain of Rs 20.72 cr on day one. Golmaal Again also got a phenomenal opening (Rs 30.14 cr) as did Dilwale (Rs 21 cr), Singham Returns (Rs 32.09 cr) and Chennai Express (Rs 33.12 cr).
Given the successful combination of Rohit Shetty and Ranveer Singh back after Simmba, expectations were high from Cirkus. Its low collection, however, was a disappointment for the entire industry. The film was released nationwide on Friday, on more than 3,200 screens with around 10,000 shows. According to Pinkvilla, the film sold out 32,000 advance tickets nationwide. Cirkus was an important release for Ranveer, especially after the failed films 83 and Jayeshbhai Jordaar.
Cirkus also presents Varun Sharma, Jacqueline Fernandez and Pooja Hegde in the lead roles.
