TOKYO The goal of Olympic imagery is to be immersive to surround the viewer of the image with the feeling of being there. And perhaps more than most sports, diving is actually ABOUT the immersion that inevitably occurs where the diver and the water meet.
In this photo, taken Tuesday by Associated Press photojournalist Morry Gash, Malaysian divers Mun Yen Leong and Pandelela Pamg compete during the women’s 10-meter platform final at the Tokyo Olympics. The effect shows them appearing to slowly blend into the water as they descend.
It was taken with a slow shutter speed from the robot’s setup on top of the diver. As Gash notes, the tricky part is getting the robot speed to move at the same speed as the divers. The result: a perfectly calibrated human skeleton like a dream surrounded by blue water, doing its best.
