A Waimea fashion designer has scored a prestigious invitation to this year’s New York Fashion Week.
New York City is no stranger to Kumu Hula Micah Kamohoalii. She did a show at the New York Botanical Garden three years ago, where she also made the connection to bring her fashion to the Big Apple.
the label, Dezigns by Kamohoalii, known for its traditional roots it comes from a long lineage of kapa makers.
Kamohoalii has been invited to this year’s New York Fashion Week at the Runway 7 fashion show. Her designs, including last year’s Grammy gown worn by her cousin Amy Hanaialii, appeared on the runway at Sony Hall near Times Square on September 9.

The Conversation meets a busy fashion designer as she prepares for her big trip.
“Everything happened so fast from getting the announcements to booking flights and accommodation, and then doing the exercises and everything,” he said. “There are 30 of us who are leaving. We have tried to get in touch with sponsors from Hawaiian organizations, from County Hawaii, from anyone and everyone who wants to help us, we’ll take it,” he added.
Kamohoalii also works as genealogy and cultural director for the Waimea Hawaiian Homesteaders’ Association, but last weekend he became a junior firefighter when a historic bushfire impacted his community on the Island of Hawaii.
