The debut of the statue in honor of fashion designer Frederick McCardell is scheduled for October

August 7 An unveiling is expected in October for a statue along Carroll Creek of the original Frederick Claire McCardell, a fashion designer who helped revolutionize women’s fashion.

City council members voted unanimously Thursday night to approve a deal with the Frederick County Community Foundation for the statue’s installation.

McCardell, who grew up in Frederick and died in 1958, was a successful designer whose innovations included creating ballet flats, sewing pockets in dresses, and Monastic dresses.

She was raised on Rockwell Terrace as the only daughter of Adrian Leroy McCardell, a state senator and president of the Frederick County National Bank. He graduated from Frederick High School and studied home economics at Hood College for two years.

McCardell’s work is on display at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, Smithsonian, Institute of Fashion Technology, Maryland Center for History and Culture, Frederick Heritage and Hood College.

The McCardell statue and public park will be at Carroll Creek Linear Park, east of East Street on the south side of the river.

In 2019, the Frederick Art Club commissioned sculptor Sarah Hempel Irani to create a statue of McCardell for public display.

The club recommends creating a protective window for the statue that maintains a direct line of sight between the statue and the former home of Union Knitting Mills, which produced the first nylon stockings for Dupont, the fabric of which McCardell often uses in his designs.

The plan is to do the groundbreaking this month, install the statue in September and hold the opening on October 17, assuming proper permits and other details go according to plan, Deputy Parks and Recreation Director Bob Smith told the mayor and council members Thursday.
