Is Confidence Important Starting Your Round in Birdie Mode?

How many times have you prepared efficiently for your round? You may have 20 balls at that distance, warm up the putter and even chipper before heading to the first tee.

You are full of confidence, you think to yourself – ‘nothing’s wrong’. A wide open fairway awaits you and… you slice your ball out of bounds and you drop three off the tee. Hiss.

While that happens all too often for amateur golfers, there are those first hole moments that can set the tone for the rest of your round; it’s crazy what a person can do to the mind!

Usually many golf courses open with ‘welcoming’ holes. It may be short in length or it may be large in fairway size. Either way, these clubs want you to start your day birdie-style – you just have to work for it.

We recently talked about one member of the Golfshake Community who not only opened with birdies but also birdies on the first four holes and upload it to the Birdie Club! While I’m sure many of us haven’t achieved that feat yet, starting the day with a birdie is the confidence boost you need as you step up to the second tee.

The key to success in golf is shooting under par. Whether you play 28 or scratch, make sure you always use your handicap as the par hole.

Below, we look at a few examples where a birdie on the opening hole resulted in a late win.

Successful Tour with Birdies in the Opening Hole

Tony Finau earned her first win in five years at the Northern Trust Open in New York. We’re not saying he won by birdie on his opening hole two days in a row, but it certainly helps. Starting from the 10th tee during the opening round, Finau started with a birdie before replicating that success the next day on the 1st!

Kevin Kissner broke a two-year winless record with a win at the Wyndham Championship in early August. The final round of 66 helped him slip into the play-offs but his birdie on the first hole of the day certainly gave him the confidence to move up the leaderboard.

When Cameron Champ securing his third PGA Tour title at the 3M Open in July, the leaderboards were stacked after the cuts were made. During his third and fourth rounds, Champ birdied the first hole which effectively allowed him to shoot under par and record his final win.

Making his first appearance at The Open Championship, Collin Morikawa Fine iron games paved the way for the second big title. Her best round this week was her second outing and guess what? He started the day in perfect fashion by birdie on the opening hole.

When Lucas gloves won his third PGA Tour title in 2011, big things looked like they were about to happen. Unfortunately, he had to wait a decade until his next victory. However, when he tasted victory at the John Deere Classic in July, the opening hole played its part. The American has birdied the opening hole on two occasions – rounds two and four – which has undoubtedly instilled the confidence to secure her first win in ten years.

Four of the last five tournament winners included at least one opening birdie. Is this a coincidence? The data would suggest no. With this in mind, we’ve compiled a list of the 10 opening holes in the UK that have had the most birdies tracked via our Score Tracker over the past 6 months.

This data is obviously subjective and depends on the handicap level of the golfer’s tracking score but if you feel opening up with birdies can trigger a once-in-a-lifetime spin then the courses below might be worth a visit We would also love to know if you have played any of these courses or courses others you may have played where you started out in the mindset with the opening birdie!
