Growing up in a middle-class household of seven, fashion was not the focus of my parents’ budget. As an 8 year old fashion lover, this was a tough pill to swallow.
The wheels are quickly turning because my little mind has to be resourceful if I want to work within my parents budget and get the clothes I love. Sometimes I can convince my parents to go to JCPenney’s biggest sale of the year, and other times I have to face the heartache of those scary little words, “No, we’re not buying you more clothes.
The little fashion lover grew up and got her first job at the age of 15 at Quiznos which was previously on 18th Street. When I received my first paycheck, I went to the mall and created an eBay account to start bidding on designer items. As the money started to disappear quickly, I realized I needed to stretch my dollar a little further. That’s when I started shopping at all the Ross, Marshalls, and TJ Maxx stores I could find, along with the occasional goodwill.
My wardrobe and shoe collection is growing rapidly, and family and friends will keep asking the same question, Where did you get it from?
That’s when I realized that looking good and being a fashion forward doesn’t require a designer label. I always knew what clothes looked good, but it wasn’t until I went to fashion school in Los Angeles that I identified how to take clothes to the next level.
Next time you go shopping, consider the following:
1. Don’t forget about color!
2. Consider your body type and what flatters you the most.
3. You don’t have to follow every trend. Take a look at past trends and consider incorporating them into your wardrobe.
4. Shop for vintage and second-hand clothes for a unique look.
5. Pay attention to the fabric. Some fabrics flow better, last longer and just look better than others.
For great deals, I still shop at TJ Maxx and Marshalls, Outlets in Tejon (especially since I work there talking about dream jobs), and Camarillo Premium Outlets.
Some designer and luxury items don’t discount second hand items. Some of my go-to places online for beautiful quality goods include The Real Real, Tradesy and Everything But the House, and don’t forget eBay! Happy shopping.
