New York Fashion Week Mens Day returns to live presentations this week, with new designers including San Diegan Tristan Detwiler showing off their 2022 collection.
The model poses like a statue as the viewer walks within touching distance of the design. Sometimes, there is a central character that conveys the theme behind the display.
Some designers this year seek inspiration near home, while others draw in the tropics further afield.
Detwiler cites the sand and beaches of his hometown of SanDiego as inspiration for his work STAND Collection, featuring colorful patterns and quilt-like fabrics in neutral, earthy colors.
I searched all the textiles myself, I met people, I learned their stories, I learned about culture, says Detwiler. Textiles come second, it’s really stories that come first.
Everyday Women’s Clothing said Thursday that the use of textiles other than quilts adds a new, and welcome, dimension to the collection.
According to the STAN website, the trail uses vintage textiles, some tattered and passed down from generation to generation, to uncover narratives of travel, ownership, clothing, repair and love.
Vibrant colors, sultry landscapes and striking shapes dominate designers Teddy Vonransons Collection.
“I’ve always wanted to make exotic collections that take me to the South Seas and I’m really inspired by Tahiti and the work of Paul Gauguin,” says Vonranson.
Meanwhile, designer William McNicol of William Frederick Koleksi Collection says all of his work is designed, developed and produced in his hometown of Cleveland.
His presentation featured a model painting a canvas while dressed in casual, neutral colors.
Most of our collections are based on creativity, curiosity, intelligence, intimacy, says McNicol.
This collection is specifically about the artist’s life, and clothing that works as well on the artist as it does in their space. “So that’s why I wanted neutral colors and things that would just disappear in an artist’s studio or loft or room,” he added.
This biennial event features ten new brands debuting their collections.
New York Fashion Week runs through Sunday.
