Marquette Achieves 3-1 Road Win at Seton Hall

Box Score SOUTH ORANGE, NJ The Marquette University men’s soccer team took their first win in a BIG EAST game in convincing fashion on Friday night, clinching a 3-1 away win over Seton Hall.

The Golden Eagles (4-4, 1-1 BIG EAST) came out and set the pace early, earning the game’s first shot of just 96 seconds as a header by a new signing Jonas Moen from the free kick sailed just wide of the target. However, it wasn’t long before Marquette’s goalless drought ended as a new midfielder Edrey Caceresused a set piece to find the top left corner of the net, giving United a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute.

“When Edrey is at his best, he’s one of the best players in the league,” head coach Marquette said. Louis Bennett. “He calms down when some people don’t calm down, and he moves surprisingly defensively. It’s rare to have a really good two-way player with the ball offensively, but who still manages to finish it defensively, but he does. It’s a great performance from him.”

Luke Sunesson got into the scoring action in the 34th minute, as a cross by the red shirt junior midfielder Zyan Andrade found the All-American striker in front of goal, who then used a header to make it 2-0. MU took the lead into the first half.

The Golden Eagles continued where they left off from the dressing room in the second half, as they continued to control the game into the final 45 minutes. Cacereson scored again in the 70th minute, when he scored his second of the game and third of the season after finishing in Andrade’s cross. For the Brazilian native, this is the second assist in the contest and third of the season.

“It was a very disciplined win. We stuck to the game plan and were very tough,” said Bennett. “Seton Hall are a strong team and they are a team that can burn you but that’s how we played today. We went out and scored three goals away against a really good team, I’m very proud of what we’ve done.”

Seton Hall came back in the last minute with a goal from Ian Albuquerque, who scored with just nine seconds remaining in the game. MU held the Pirates with just two shots on goal in the match.

It was United’s first win at Seton Hall since 2011, and second in the program’s history.

NEXT: The Golden Eagles head home to host Providence (5-1-1, 1-0-0 BIG EAST) on Saturday, October 2 at Valley Fields. This will be the team’s Alumni Appreciation Night, and they will honor former United players at the event. Screening will begin at 7:05 p.m. (CST), and can be streamed on FloFC.
