“Isn’t it April?”

Monday’s 125th Boston Marathon has posed that question to many athletes and spectators, who are used to cheering thousands of people along the 26.2-mile track on Patriot Day, a Massachusetts state holiday in April. More than 900 days have passed since the last face-to-face Boston Marathon was held, due to the global pandemic.

Monday’s field of 20,000 face-to-face runners will be intentionally smaller than the usual number of participants, but many international participants have had to withdraw due to travel restrictions triggered by the coronavirus.

Adidas, which extended its official sponsorship for the Boston Marathon last spring, is entering its 32nd year as the official supplier of footwear and apparel for the race. But other brands like Under Armor and New Balance are working overtime to attract shoppers to their respective stores in the Copley Square area. Under Armor has hung a giant “Welcome Runners” banner at the entrance to the Prudential Center store and the entrance is lined with marathon-inspired T-shirts and clothing. New Balance is also involved in running-themed branding.

As hundreds of marathon runners and their supporters switched between picking up their bib numbers at the marathon show at the John B. Hynes Convention Center and selfies near the Boylston Street finish line, many stopped to shop at the area retailer. Dozens of people lingered outside Marathon Sports, where clothes racks were laid out on the sidewalk and shop doors were wide open. A few meters away is a memorial to the victims of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings that killed three people and injured 260.

In an open Q&A on Saturday afternoon, Meb Keflezighi spoke about the city’s resilience and how the “Boston Strong” mindset lives on. He recalls how after the bombing, he vowed on the eve of the 2013 Boston Marathon to compete in the 2014 event and he focused on that goal for 365 days. On the morning of the 2014 race, he said he wanted to write the names of the victims on his shirt but knew that “sponsors would be angry.”
But in the end, Keflezighi carved their names on his shirt with a Sharpie pen, and was grateful that he did.

“It went viral.”
He also won the men’s race, making him the first American man to do so in 31 years.

Elite runners describe the Boston Marathon as “the Olympics for the everyday runner.” He and four other Boston Marathon champions will serve as grand marshals with eight frontline workers sailing along the track with two Boston Duck Boats.

BAA officials keep watch near a series of glass cases displaying marathon memorabilia such as the black swimsuit and near-knee-length shorts Bobbi Gibb wore after sneaking in to run the then-all-male race in 1966. The “Bowdoin” was cotton. The T-shirt worn by 1983 women’s champion Joan Benoit Samuelson to represent her alma mater is also visible, as is the kit worn by Katherine Switzer, the first woman to officially run the race in 1967 (though the race manager attempted to take her number auto and end her bid.)

While some may have been inspired by the Boston Marathon trophy that was on display on Saturday for a limited time, or by the Lego version nearby, Keflezighi offered a few words of warning about Monday’s 26.2-mile ride, encouraging attendees not to get out too soon, explaining that the road -The narrow lanes in the first half and the cheers of the crowd can lead to a second half try – speaking from personal experience. He also talked about meeting a contestant at the 2013 show, who told him it took him 22 years to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Feeling the patience-training analogy a little flat, Keflezighi reminded them that running and marathons can be painful, but they can also be rewarding.
