When it comes to eye makeup routines, our eyelids and eyelashes usually see the bulk of the action, but social media users and fashion designers seem to firmly believe that the area under our eyes deserves a moment to shine too. From deliberate under eye circles to bejeweled details and everything in between, bold under eye makeup is sure to be on trend, as first reported by The Cut. And while we never expect it, we don’t necessarily hate how it looks.
Circles under the eyes start a trend
The quirky trend arguably started earlier this year when TikTok users started embracing the dark circles that most of us try to cover with concealer. But instead of just showing off their natural dark circles, these TikTok makeup experts deliberately paint dark circles with eye shadow.
Download TikToker @saracarstens, which is under eye circles video caused a stir on social media a few months ago. In the short clip (which he also posted on Instagram), a TikTok user swipes a bit of color under his eye and smudges it for a more subtle effect. She told TMRW that she was inspired to post the video because she struggled to come to terms with her own dark circles for years.
“I have them genetically and they’re always really intense. The first makeup product I picked up was concealer. Then I realized that there’s nothing to be ashamed of and they can really look really cool, so I decided to embrace them and tuck them in. some of my makeup looks,” she said.
Social media users hope this trend continues to gain traction and inspire others who are insecure about their dark circles to find ways to make it work.
“Many people are struggling/still struggling with their eye bags/dark circles and now we are finally seeing the aesthetics and beauty in them,” she said.
Under eye jewelry approved by celebrities
Some TikTokers, like makeup artist @abbyroberts, have given their under-eye bag a glam makeover with bold eye shadow colors and gem details. But social media users aren’t the only ones who have decided to start dressing their under-eyes.
At the Met Gala this September, some participants wore jewelery under their eyes. Take, for example, rookie model Ella Emhoff, who made her Met Gala debut in a red trouser suit with matching sneakers and delicate crystals around her eyes.
“Dear Evan Hansen” star Ben Platt also accentuated the bottom of his eyes with one gem on each side at the fashion show.

A bold under-eye look makes a statement on the runway
Bold makeup is always a runway staple at fashion week, and designers seem to be taking inspiration from TikTok’s unexpected makeup trends this season.
For example, these models at the Del Core Spring/Summer 2022 runway show last month rocked neon under-eye makeup as they strutted their stuff down the runway.
At the Etro fashion show, we also saw a model walking down the runway with a large amount of jewelery adorning the bottom of her eyes.
Is the under eye makeup “yay” or “nay”?
The biggest attention we’ve ever paid to our under-eye makeup has been to dab some concealer and maybe some eyeliner, but we’re definitely intrigued by this sudden wave of creative looks. While most aren’t designed for everyday wear, we can definitely see ourselves rocking some under-eye crystals at night or trying our hand at smudged liner. But the question remains: Are you going to rock the trend?
