10 fashion and beauty trends from the 00s that defined your childhood

The nineties and early 00s were an exciting era for fashion and beauty choices, especially for us people here in Scotland.

What’s even more interesting is that the Y2K fashion trend is currently booming among the younger generation, who seem to be adapting some trends that we think millennials are really cool with at the time.

First of all, we want to apologize for the feeling of regret this post may cause, but you have to admit that some of these trends made you feel really cool when you were in high school and trying to prove your status as one of the ‘kids’ .’

It will also make you realize that there is an entire generation of kids today who were raised under the influence of professional beauty and fashion, whereas we have the likes of Paris Hilton and MTV for inspiration.

From dresses over trousers, to cakings in Maybelline Matte Mousse, we certainly made a few choices of the day that will make us cringe today.

So push some Basshunters or Darren Styles – yes, I’ll have full Scottish nostalgia on you – and take a look back at some of the trends that were so popular if you grew up in the early 00s.

Dress over pants

In the early nineties and 00s more layering was always a good thing.

If you can’t decide whether you want to wear a dress or trousers, we cool kids just combined the two for this extra stylish look.

Better yet – remember wearing a thick belt from Quiz or New Look for extra size, just in case layering isn’t enough?

Maybelline Matte Mousse

Before the age of contouring, blending, and beauty influencers who taught us about beauty, there was Maybelline Matte Mousse.

No teenage girl is ready to go to school without piling layer upon layer of this totally imperceptible “shake” foundation.

Remember how this stuff used to stick to every place and pore on your face?

Thank God for the beauty influencers who have since taught us the mistakes of our ways.

Tassel combat pants

Are you one of the cool kids at school if you DON’T wear baggy combat pants?

Long before the school dress code was introduced, these frayed brats were well-liked by us millennials, especially when we were in our first and second years.

Admit it – you’re kind of glad they went out of style really quickly.

Popper sweatpants

Another cool pants trend that 90s babies will definitely remember.

You begged your mom for a pair of Kappa trackie bottoms, but they had to come with poppers on the side and no matter how many times your mom said it was ridiculous, you insisted they look cool.

You also failed to tell your mom they were going to get caught on everything and expose your feet, because you refused to give her the satisfaction of being, frankly, right.

jelly shoes

Is a family vacation complete if you don’t have your favorite pair of jelly shoes?

These plastic shoes that scrub our feet are a staple if you want to make a statement, and you get bonus points if they’re the sparkly kind.

To be fair, these cheap shoes cost less than ten pounds to your mom and can now be seen in designer collections for thousands of pounds, so you’re technically ahead of the game.

Multiple cuffs and wrist bracelets

Weighing up your sleeves with lots of cheap bracelets, wrist cuffs and sweatbands are really the way to access any outfit and we wouldn’t hear it any differently.

You used to spend hours at Claire’s or Internacionale getting all the cheap, colorful bracelets you could think of and, at my school, you were one of the cooler kids when you got your hands on a shimmery, out-of-the-ordinary bracelet.

Bonus points for those of us who get inlaid handcuffs to prove to people that we are different from the crowd!

Anything and everything Burberry

Never say that young Scots aren’t fashionable, because most of us who grew up in the early ’00s know that having a hat or jacket with a Burberry print was the pinnacle of Scottish fashion as a teenager.

It’s not that you pay a designer price tag – it’s more like you buy it from the local market stall you visit with your parents every Sunday.

The whole look is complete with some DJs coming out of your phone as you walk down the street with your Burberry up.

Tie as necklace

Before you have to wear it to school, wearing a tie as a necklace actually looks cool to do, thanks to Avril Lavigne.

Paired with a vest top that doesn’t require any tie, because you’re so cool.

The look was simply complemented by cargo pants and a trip to Tammy Girl to really embody their edgy vibe.

Velor sportswear

Let’s admit this now, Paris Hilton was one of your biggest style inspirations growing up and you can’t deny it.

From Von Trucker Hats to low rise jeans, but it’s a Juicy Couture-esque velor tracksuit you MUST get and most likely one of Quiz’s wildly popular neon pinks or greens of the past. 2005. Come on, you have to remember what I’m talking about.
