James Tavernier delighted Fashion Sakala got his Rangers prize against Motherwell

It was Captain Tavernier who started the comeback as he produced a fine finish to cancel out Bevis Mugabi’s strike that added to the pressure on Rangers.

Sakala then came forward as he scored either side of the break to seal the win and he would complete his hat-trick late on as Glen Kamara and Kemar Roofe also scored.

The six-goal display was Rangers’ biggest win so far and Tavernier was delighted to see Sakala and his Ibrox team-mates score after several frustrating weeks in the final third.

Tavernier said: “I was on FaceTime for my brother on the way in and I said I wanted to win, but I wanted to get one assist or one goal and I’m happy that I contributed one goal and two assists.

“I’m devastated that Kem put Simmo in or I would have got another assist. I thought the lads were great.

“From the goals we conceded, from then on we stuck to the game plan and I thought the whole game we were great. The fans are great too.

“I try to contribute to myself, but I think everyone is stepping forward. We keep asking questions and we never give up.

“Fashion, he was absolutely sensational for us. He was behind, worked hard and he got a hat-trick today and I’m very proud of him.

“I think everyone contributed really well and that gave us the opportunity to put in substitutes and people to get more playing time. I thought we were great.

“He (Sakala) worked hard from the first whistle to the last whistle. Whoever gave him the gel before his third goal, it was his own assist.

“Good ball from Davo to give him a hat-trick. He worked hard, he put himself in that position and he got the prize.”

Rangers go into the Fir Park clash on the back of a disappointing draw with Aberdeen in midweek which saw their advantage in the title race cut once again.

But the champions will make the most of Celtic’s slip-up at home to Livingston on Saturday as they storm to an emphatic win against the Steelmen.

And Tavernier knows Rangers must now find that level consistently as attention turns to their Europa League clash with Brondby on Thursday night.

Tavernier told RangersTV: “We have to build on this. We are in a good place. We knew we had to respond all week and we did today.

“The fans were right behind us, even though we lost, and we responded well before half-time.

“We were relentless throughout the second half and you could see by the number of goals we scored that we kept asking questions until the final whistle. We kept chasing them and we didn’t let go.

“We knew it was coming because we worked hard. I thought everything was fine.

“Gameplan and everyone’s contribution to it. And the submarine too.”
