Designed by Peter Mabeo and produced by artisans across Botswana, the Fendi Mabeo collaboration is a ten-part collection that explores local crafts and pushes traditional techniques and materials in new directions. The collection includes Gabi-Gabi sculpture, large-scale centerpiece made of galvanized sheet metal, and remade in a smaller version in the brass table lamp ‘Gabinyana’; and the ‘Shiya’ seat, made of panga panga wood and plywood. Reaching into different experimental territory is the ‘Foro’ chair, which moves away from the idea of clay objects being monoliths and instead uses materials to make the archetypal chair (an additional version is made of panga panga wood).

Viewing the works in this collaboration is like exploring a craft map in Botswana, as Mabeo enlists an extensive network of artisans to bring each design to life. ‘We’ve traveled all over the country, we’ve engaged basket weavers, metalworkers, people who practice ancient techniques, as well as our local wood and metal craftsmen,’ he explains. The human connection is key to bringing the pieces together, he adds: ‘I didn’t want to just use the material for the sake of it, but to create an opportunity to engage with craftsmen who still retain this technique, going back in time. so long.’ Author: Rosa Bertoli right
