The Merricks case was brought on behalf of all individuals, over the age of 16, who purchased any product from a UK business that accepted Mastercard between 1992 and 2008 — unless they opted out of the lawsuit.

More than a dozen brands have filed legal claims over historic charging fees, alleging competition law violations, The Telegraph reports.

It comes as Amazon confirmed UK customers would not be able to use Visa credit cards while using the e-commerce platform, due to high fees after Brexit.

Now, the new action will see the High Court assess claims from brands including Levi, Superdry and AllSaints, which attorneys at Stephenson Harwood have suggested.

According to Visa, there is no connection between the company’s legal claims and Amazon’s decision.

“Visa considers all claims relating to the exchange to be baseless and will be vigorously defended,” a Visa spokesperson told The Telegraph.

Last year’s Supreme Court ruling ruled that the fees charged to retailers for each card transaction, by Visa and Mastercard, constituted a violation of EU and UK competition laws.

Mastercard said: “We strongly believe that retailers of all sizes derive real value from our network and we are committed to supporting our retail partners to adapt and grow their businesses through these challenging times.”
