Chicago Preacher leads sermon on drag

A Chicago seminarian this month led a church service for shabby-clad children, hoping to teach his young audience about joy and inclusivity.

Aaron Musser, a preacher at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church of Logan Square, said he decided to wear drag because it made him happy, with his outfit serving as a “rehearsal dress” for the ultimate joy he believes will come with the return of Jesus Christ.

In the same post, Musser, who is gay, wrote that the event would take place on the sixth Sunday of Advent, known as rejoicing Sunday, providing an opportunity to “practice what a joyful life is like.”

“Preaching in hindsight is a theological reflection on joy: Joy overflows so much, it can’t help but make itself known,” he wrote.

During the event, Musser, wearing a long white dress, platinum blonde wig, and makeup, read to a group of children from Corrinne Averiss’s book “Joy” and led them in prayer.

“Today, we considered what it would be like to have a rehearsal for the kind of joy that awaits us on the other side of Advent. It is very difficult to know what joy is, because some of us have not had joy in a long time. It’s been a tough and tiring few years,” Musser write in a Facebook post after the sermon.

She added: “And I decided instead of telling you, ‘this is how I want you to be happy,’ as we prepared for this rehearsal, I thought I was going to wear a dress like so many people who have inspired me have done. . I decided to follow their example, showing that liberation from oppressive laws paves the way to happiness.”

“But allowing yourself to feel joy can be scary. I wasn’t sure how the outside world would handle me when they saw me this morning. Joy is hard to feel, it is vulnerable. But isn’t it very beautiful?” he wrote.

Comments on Musser’s post, which was posted to the official St. Facebook page. Luke, mostly positive, but the church is still closing the comments section after a few days.

“We’ve temporarily frozen comments on this post. We appreciate all the love and encourage you to continue to pray for full inclusion, discernment, and justice for LGBTQIA+ people in the church,” wrote St. Luke.

While the Musser congregation in St. Luke received his message of inclusion, similar performances at other places of worship have not been well received.

Reverend Craig Duke, formerly of Newburgh United Methodist Church in Evansville, Indiana, made headlines earlier this month when he “released from pastoral duties” after dressed in drag on the latest episode of the HBO series “We’re Here.”
