Air Force Adds Danny Detjen to Men’s Team for 2022

The United States Air Force Academy has added another member to its class of freshmen for 2022, taking a verbal commitment from Danny Detjen from Draper, Utah. The Det. General is currently in his final year at Brighton High School.

At the 2021 Utah 5A Swimming and Diving Championships in February, the DG wiped out the event, claiming state titles at 200 free and 500 free. Both of his wins have come in dominant fashion, with his 200th win coming by a margin of 4 seconds and his 500 title coming nearly 8 seconds. With a height adjustment, he touched 200 at 1:40.17, while he finished 500 at 4:35.83. A year earlier, he had placed second in the same two events, finishing behind Austin Butler in both.

During the summer, the DG, while competing for Cottonwood Heights Aquatics, was a multiple event finalist at the Utah Long Course Swim Championship. He made it to the A-finals of 100 fly, with the altitude adjustment time being 1:00.08. He also swam in the final B of 100 free (55.26) and in the preliminary round of 50 free (25.92) and 100 back (1:04.57).

The Directorate General is very flexible and can compete in various events at the university level. He will likely narrow his focus to long-distance freestyle events, as he will provide solid depth to the Air Force in those races as soon as he gets to college. Last season, he would have the third fastest time in 1650 in the team, as well as sixth fastest in the free 500. Team led in intermediate race by Wen Zhang, who was the conference champion at 200 free and took 7 in 500 free.

Zhang is one of the most accomplished swimmers in Air Force history. Just a junior, Zhang set a conference record in the 200 free earlier this season at 1:34.55. He also sits as the second fastest player in WAC history in the free 100, just 0.11 behind his former teammate Isaac Gwin.

The Air Force guys are coming off their most successful season in the team’s history. The team scored a conference record of 864 points at the Western Athletics Conference Championships, winning twelve events and setting a total of nine program records. Team received three conference awards, with head coach Rob Clayton get WAC Best Coach of the Year, Zach Nelson won Swimmer of the Year, and Zhang won Newcomer of the Year.
