Oskar Steen Scores His First Career NHL Goal In A Totally Weird Way – CBS Boston

BOSTON (CBS) — Players never forget their first professional goal. But no one will forget how Oskar Steen scored his first NHL goal.

The 23-year-old forward ended a 1-1 draw with the New Jersey Devils in the second half at TD Garden on Tuesday night, turning the lights on in a totally unique and unusual way. Nick Foligno sent a backhand effort to Devils keeper Mackenzie Blackwood early in the frame, which was deflected into the net.

Steen didn’t stop playing and saw an opportunity to make something happen, sticking his wand under the crossbar to poke the ball. This sent the puck from the top of the net and into the back of Blackwood, where the ball slid into the back of the net.

The referee chatted at length to discuss whether the goals should count or not. Steen hit the puck from under the crossbar instead of trying to scrape it off the top, so according to the book he didn’t use a high stick to get the puck.

So the goals counted and the Bruins took a 2-1 lead early in the second half. They struggled to win 5-3, the team’s third in a row.

Tuesday night was Steen’s fifth NHL game of the season and eighth of his career. The 2016 sixth-round pick from Sweden has made his case for a place in the Boston lineup with some solid play in the AHL, tallying five goals and six assists over 23 games for the Providence Bruins this season.
