IRON MOUNTAIN, Michigan (WLUC) — The Dickinson County Library accepts donations for its annual Prom Dress Exchange. Finding the perfect prom dress is essential to match your dashing date. Some of these dresses can cost hundreds of dollars.
It was an expensive dress, but they were able to get it for free at our event. They’ll love to try it, and be able to choose something they’re really passionate about, says Emily Cummings, Library Local History & Young Adult, Adult Programming Coordinator.
This is the 12th annual event. Cummings said the impact of the dress was unique.
We had someone who had a house fire and had several daughters. There’s no way they can go to prom in dresses. There was no way they could afford it because they lost everything. They come to our events and they can get the perfect dress they want, and they have a lot of fun, Cummings explains.
Cummings says they have more than 100 dresses from previous events but asking for donations this early allows for more variety. Cummings says libraries are more than just books.
No matter what age, we want to reach everyone. The fact that this event has been going on since 2009 demonstrates the fact that it is necessary, and the need exists. “We’re so excited to be the ones to do that,” said Cummings.
Tie donations will also be accepted, and Friends of the Library will also sponsor two tuxedo rentals from Nics Boutique in Iron Mountain.
You do not have to attend the event. If you donate an item, we’ll keep a list. If you attend the event, we’ll also keep a list, says Cummings.
The event will be held March 5 and 6 at the Dickinson County Library. All are welcome, and no one will be turned down.
