West Bromwich man disguises himself as cop with ‘luxury shirt’ badge

A man admitted to posing as a police officer with a badge of fancy clothes because he was scared.

Lee Davis claimed he was in a parking lot in downtown Birmingham when an unidentified man approached and said ‘do you want to have some fun?’.

The 27-year-old said he was ‘paniced’ and grabbed the holder of a fake police card, which contained his student identification, which he recently used at a costume party.

But shortly after the man left, the real police came to the scene and arrested him.

Davis, of Turner Street, West Bromwich, admitted to undercover as a police officer at Birmingham Magistrates Court on Tuesday, January 11. But he escaped punishment and was granted a six-month parole.

The incident occurred on December 13 last year.

Prosecutor Zulqarnain Saeed said: “Officers were alerted to the incident of a man claiming to be a plainclothes police officer. The identified man was in the parking lot.

“Officers went to the location, spoke with the defendant and conducted a search. The person was found to have a warrant card holder with a student card inside.”

Reading the basis of his defense, he stated Davis became suspicious of a car with tinted windows and its taillights on. He said a man seemed to be looking at him and then approaching.

The court was told that Davis claimed he rolled down his window and said ‘what do you want?’ to which the man replied kindly adding ‘do you want to have some fun?’.

Davis declared he was ‘panicked’ and showed his warrant card to the man who got back in his car and drove off. Davis said he was ‘shocked’ by the confrontation.

Catherine Daly, defending, said: “He was approached by someone he didn’t know and showed the warrant card in a panic and fright. The warrant card was already in his vehicle and was recently used.”

“It was not taken on purpose, not planned or calculated beforehand. It was an opportunistic and stupid thing to do.”

He managed to argue that ‘experience is enough of a barrier’ that Davis should avoid further punishment.

However he had to pay £135 in court fees and a £22 victim surcharge and stayed out of trouble for six months.
