The fashion world is mourning again after news Sunday night that French fashion designer Manfred Thierry Mugler, known for helping define 1980s dress styles and creating fantastic celebrity looks, has died. He is said to be 73 years old.
His death followed that of André Leon Talley, who died on January 18 also at the age of 73. Mugler’s death was revealed on his Instagram account and further details on the cause of death were not disclosed.
Aside from her style of dress, Mugler’s fashion designs are very whimsical and avant garde, with many of the brand’s fantastic looks worn by the likes of Kim Kardashian West, Cardi B, Beyoncé, Demi Moore, and many others. In recent years, several of her looks have gone viral on the red carpet, including the vintage 1995 Venus dress Cardi B wore to the 2019 Grammys.
Celebrities and fashion industry figures have taken to Instagram to honor the late fashion designer. Actress Tracee Ellis Ross shared a video of herself and her mother Diana Ross walking the Mugler fashion show in the early 1990s with the caption: “Thierry Mugler is a defining force in fashion. Even the current archive collection seems futuristic. He is a true dreamer. She is designing for a future where women are in charge and on top. Her clothes are sculptural, sexy and fierce. I remember her as a cheerful and beautiful person. He loves my mother. And allowed me to take part in his wonderful world. It’s an honor to have such a small piece of history with a true fashion icon.”
Burberry’s chief creative officer and designer Riccardo Tisci shared a video of Mugler’s performance and a photo of himself with the designer with the caption: “Recently I’ve lost too many people close to me. Thierry, you must be one of them. You started out as a hero, my deepest inspiration and one who showed the world how to be inclusive in all things across your art and genius. Then the most incredible thing happened…we crossed paths and became friends; it’s an honor to know you, to love you and to be loved by you sincerely. You will be sorely missed but soar high as a new angel and surrounded by the same joy you spread on earth. WELCOME ANGELS”
Casey Cadwallader, who has served as Mugler’s creative director since 2018, paid tribute to the late designer by sharing a photo of Mugler and writing, “Manfred, I am so honored to have known you and worked in your wonderful world. You are changing our perception of beauty, self-confidence, representation and self-empowerment. Your legacy is something I carry with me in everything I do. Thank You.”
