While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has featured plenty of original material over the years, from introducing Clark Gregg’s Phil Coulson to changing Thanos’ motivation to wipe out half of all life in the universe, ultimately the superhero franchise turned to comics for stories. inspiration. This includes massive crossovers like Infinity Gauntlet and Civil war, and now a new Marvel Comics event is being teased that will involve the Avengers, X-Men and Eternals. So could something similar be revealed in the MCU?
What Marvel Comics Has For The Avengers, X-Men, and Eternals
Earlier today, Marvel Comics announced a crossover event called Judgment Day is coming in the summer of 2022, and it will see the Avengers, X-Men and Eternals collide in some way. Plot-specific information is being kept under lock and key right now, but more details will be revealed next week. For now, all we have to work on are three ominous quotes from Tony Stark/Iron Man, Irene Adler (aka Destiny, not to be confused with the Sherlock Holmes character of the same name) and Druig, an Eternal played by Barry Keoghan in Eternal film. You can read it below:
“Broadly speaking, I’m pro-conceit, but… how do you think we’ll make a god in a few hours?” – Tony Stark
“There will always be war. That’s one thing you can always be sure of.” – Irene Adler
“For a million years, Earth has been protected from Deviations. But we made mistakes… we missed a few. The mutants.” – Druigi
The X-Men and the Avengers have crossed many times in the comics, with one of the more significant shared events being 2010. Avengers vs. X-Men. And while Eternals didn’t get as many pages for decades and were usually featured in more standalone stories, they did spend time with the Avengers and the X-Men on occasion. But to have all three of them together like this is a pretty big deal, and it will be interesting to see how it turns out. Judgment Day affecting the wider Marvel Comics universe.
Can This Be Done In The MCU?
If you had asked me this question half a decade ago, I would have said no. Back then, 20th Century Fox was still a separate film studio and owned the rights to the X-Men and Fantastic Four, which is why those teams had yet to appear in the MCU. However, Disney has acquired Fox and renamed it 20th Century Studios, so now the X-Men and Fantastic Four are under the Marvel Studios umbrella and will be introduced to the MCU at some point, with Spider-Man: No Way HomeJon Watts is directing the reboot centered on the latter group.
As for Eternals, their first film came out last November, and while a sequel hasn’t been announced yet, we can expect to see some, if not all of the protagonists still alive in the MCU again. And while it’s unclear if the Avengers team is still technically active in Phase Four, you can rest assured that if a big enough threat emerges, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will band together to defeat it. So hypothetically, yes, a crossover between Avengers, X-Men and Eternals could be done in the MCU. Depending on what happens, it has the potential to be as big as End gameif not more.
What Are the Chances of We Actually Seeing This MCU?
First, whatever ends with this Judgment Day crossover, don’t expect the MCU to deliver a faithful adaptation of the show. Whenever the MCU adapts a Marvel Comics crossover, it often takes major creative liberties with a narrative beat; or, in the case of Avengers: Age of Ultron, similar in name only. But speaking more generally, I’d say there’s a good chance the MCU versions of Avengers, X-Men and Eternals could come together someday, although you shouldn’t expect to see them for very long.
The main obstacle to making this happen is the fact that, as already mentioned, we haven’t seen the X-Men in the MCU yet. Currently the MCU film roster is filled through the summer of 2023, and with films like Sword, Fantastic Four and Captain America 4 making steady progress, I’d say the earliest we see an X-Men-related film is in 2025. Give a few extra years for the mutants to settle into this continuity, and all sorts of crossovers similar to Judgment Day likely won’t be revealed until the late 2020s, if not in the early 2030s.
It is worth mentioning there rumors that Eternals could play a role in bringing mutants into the MCU. If that’s the case, maybe we could see an Eternals/X-Men crossover a bit more quickly, if not only revealed in the first X-Men MCU film. But for now, the pieces aren’t ready for the Avengers, X-Men and Eternals to collide in one setting. Plus, with all the mutliversal madness going on in this superhero franchise and a possible Secret Wars movie in development, cramming a crossover like this can feel like overkill.
Eternal now streaming to those with a Disney+ subscription, and we’ll keep you posted on news about the X-men reboot, other Avengers installments, and other upcoming Marvel films.
