Since Wimbledon ended last July, there has been a lot of discussion in tennis about the first man to win 21 Grand Slam titles.
The focus is almost entirely on Novak Djokovic’s bid; almost none on Rafael Nadal.
With 2022’s first Grand Slam title to be decided on Sunday, Nadal is just one win away.
He will play in the Australian Open final against US Open champion Daniil Medvedev, who is eyeing back-to-back major titles and his own, albeit smaller, history.
So long in the making, so many months off touring for Nadal, and so much drama surrounding Djokovic’s deportation the night before his Australian Open title defense was about to begin, making the race for 21 that much more exciting.
Nadal, last month, wasn’t even sure if he would even arrive in Australia after hours of frustrating and intensive rehabilitation for a leg injury that could never be fully repaired, and a bout of COVID-19.
“For me, it’s all about the Australian Open more than anything,” said Nadal. “Frankly, for me it’s much more important to have a chance to play tennis than to win 21, right?”
Nadal is tied for a record, 20, in the absence of Djokovic — the nine-time Australian Open champion whose visa was revoked for failing to meet the country’s strict COVID-19 requirements — and Roger Federer, who is still recovering from right knee surgery.
