Bodum Seeks to Enforce French Press Trade Dress With New Lawsuit

Kitchenware maker Bodum USA Inc. is seeking to enforce its trade dress claims to its iconic French press coffeemaker, accusing a smaller manufacturer of infringement in Chicago federal court.

Bodum, a Swiss company that popularized the coffee brewing method in the 1980s, said its flagship Chambord French press has a “unique, iconic and inherently distinctive design.”

The product’s trade dress is composed of circular and vertical metal bands that connect to the product’s feet, a semi-circular black handle, and its lid and knob at the top, the complaint filed on Tuesday said.
