This is how you dress for a party at Rihanna’s

I am a savage so everything I do is gonna be savage, Rihanna told Elle in 2018 ahead of her second Savage x Fenty show in New York. Savage is not about looking sexy, its not about the product its all about you. And her gospel is far-reaching. At the thudding, thrashing annual showcase of Rihanna’s namesake underwear label, in attendance are true believers. They dress for themselves. And yes, they all look pretty savage.

At an Amazon Prime premiere, the big event attracted big names: Damson Idris, Cara Delevingne, Simu Liu, Taraji P. Henson, Alton Mason and Rickey Thompson, among others. But this red carpet didn’t feel, or look, like a regular viewing party. Nor was it the crisp, curated line-up of a regular fashion show. Guests were doing sexy on their terms and they ran the gamut of modern fashion.

For Snowfall‘s Idris, it was Nu Coast. So classic Cali skatewear in a graphic tee, but with a row of pearls, embroidered trousers, delicate Van Cleef bracelets and fine rings: a look that mashes high fashion, pop culture and low effort into one solid mix. It shouldn’t work and yet it does. For the Vine supreme Thompson, battered biker leathers, and ears with more hoops than a customs check at Sydney Airport. TikTok creator Cylus Sandoval did Berghain queue jump in leather and sheer. Model James Baek did 70s preppy. Bodystockings for Xoai Pham. Pajama suits for Anarcius Jean. Theres so much exciting stuff here.

But perhaps the highest (and sexiest) point was from Marvel’s Liu. When you’ve undergone a training regime that requires unforgiving lycra and inflatable abs, it’s your human right to show it off. The 33-year-old went topless, revealing a double boxer waistband (the sluttiest thing a man can do in 2022, BTW) above silk pink harem trousers with a tie-around train. It’s good and mad and a testament to just how far Hollywood guys have come. Two-pieces won’t cut it at a Rihanna party.

The grand unveiling itself has come under fire in recent days. Rihanna, the internet’s eternal favourite, has reportedly cast Johnny Depp, the internet’s eternal divider, to walk in Savage x Fenty Vol. 4. The noise around the show may not be as loud as it once was. But untarnished is the original commandment of Savage x Fenty: people are finally placing themselves, and not product, at the center of fashion and we’ve never had more fun.
