The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s 2018 royal wedding was watched by the world – nearly 30 million people on TV alone, to be precise – with all eyes on the bridal gown Clare Waight Keller designed for Givenchy couture.
Four years later, the designer reflects on that historic moment in the latest episode of the Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan.
“Looking at the design of the dresses, there is a lot of talk about how you want to present yourself to the world,” explained the British designer. “Most of us have weddings with 70 to a hundred people. It’s a billion people watching.”
He added: “It has to be perfect, it has to be perfect.”
Meghan walked down the aisle in a Keller’s Givenchy design, which was widely praised for its elegant simplicity. The understated dress was floor-length and featured long sleeves with a bateau neckline – and beautifully reflected Meghan’s own classic personal style.
The bride wore a silk cady gown with a cathedral five-metre-long veil trimmed with lace depicting the flora of each of the Commonwealth’s 53 countries. It is held on by Queen Mary’s beautiful diamond bandeau tiara, which was originally made in 1932 and lent to Meghan by the late Queen.
“We wanted to create a timeless piece that emphasized Givenchy’s iconic code throughout its history, while conveying modernity through sleek lines and sharp cuts,” Waight Keller said at the time. “Instead, the delicate floral beauty of the veil is a vision Meghan and I share, a special gesture that embraces the flora of the commonwealth, rising to the hem of silk tulle.”
Meghan and Prince Harry’s documentary – detailing their experiences as royals and their relationship with the press – has set a new record as Netflix’s most successful documentary to date.
Harry & Meghan has had more viewing time than any other documentary in the history of the streaming platform so far the first week. The first three episodes logged 81.55 million hours watched worldwide, with more than 28 million households watching them.
The first of three episodes debuted on December 8, with part two available to stream on Netflix starting December 15. Watch the trailer for part two, here:
