Students are fascinated by silk, denim and other fabrics as they reuse recycled materials redefining their goals through the Fashion ReInterpretation course offered at CCS.
Fifteen dual high school students and twelve undergraduate students create unique fashion looks. This course is partially sponsored by St. Vincent de Paul and General Motors Design for an Equitable Future grant.
Lead Fashion Designer, Aki Choklat, and adjunct faculty, Dana Keaton Wilson and Gabriella Weinkauf guide students through the design process. Each student receives a $500 gift card to St. Vincent de Paul to purchase materials to reuse into original designs that would later be displayed at Fashion show. 10 high school students can participate at no cost through a General Motors Design for an Equitable Future grant.
Made several trips to the St. Louis store. Vincent de Paul, students filled shopping carts with clothes and left with trash bags full of materials, dragging them to the 9th floor studio.
Dual enrollment students copy their own Fashion Show looks, and anxiety looms over the day, but Allison Runyan, Precollege Operations Manager and Continuing Studies, is with the students every step of the way. Runyan gave a talk to boost their confidence before walking down the runway, and every student left with a smile on their face and proud of their work.
They [students] said they would do it again, and they learned a lot and it was a difficult concept, said Runyan. I’d walk into the studio at the start and they’d be like, This is so challenging or This is so frustrating, but it’s going to be worth it. Students may recognize that this is something difficult for them to learn, but it will be well worth it.
All used materials that are not used, will be recycled in future courses, so that more students can reimagine fashion and give new purpose to old clothes.
High school students have the opportunity to take college-level courses and earn credits that simultaneously count toward high school and college through the CCS dual enrollment program. Students with dual enrollment learn about careers, hone their skills, and try their hand at college before graduating high school.
