Minority Reports Build Future Fashion From Three Different Worlds

Deborah L. Scott is one of Hollywood’s foremost costume designers, having worked on hit films such as “ET the Extra-Terrestrial”, “Back to the Future”, “Heat”, “Titanic”, “Wild Wild West”, “Wild Wild West”, three “Transformers” films, and two “Avatar” films. In a recent interview with Jack Giroux /The Film itself, Scott discusses his approach to designing clothes for future residents, and how they need to be divided between class lines. In “Minority Report”, the police officers are very fascist and look very strict and militant. The world outside is wild and diverse and represents an oppressed civilian population. And then, of course, there’s Cruise himself, who needs to stand outside his character’s hero status and his actor status as a “movie star.” Scott said:

“[I]It’s more of a fantastical world, but we’re basing it, again, on reality. What I did, when I started designing the film, there were three parts to society. There’s Tom Cruise, there’s the authoritarian, and then there’s the underground. I used three different illustrators with different styles, so you can get this feeling naturally. Tom Cruise are real world, they are slick, they are minimal designs based on artists who are more fashion illustrators. So it’s a little gesture and very simple.”

With the world so divided, and with three illustrators to assist with the design, Scott also showed that each part of society needs to evoke a different era of the past. As well as fashion illustrators for Cruise, Scott also employs a connoisseur of classic 1940s Hollywood designs and 1960s fascist designs.
