What more does Sarfaraz Khan need to do to earn a much-deserved Test call-up? Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has fired a fresh shot at the Chetan Sharma-led All India Selection Committee for ignoring rising star Sarfaraz amid his torrid form in the domestic arena. Overlooked for the high profile Test series between India and Australia, promising young talent Sarfaraz notched up another hundred to continue his dazzling run on India’s domestic circuit.
Days after former India fast bowler Venkatesh Prasad lambasted the national selectors for ignoring Sarfaraz, batting legend Gavaskar extended his support to the in-form batsman by taking an epic dig at the All India Selection Committee. The former India captain and full-time cricket pundit has also blasted critics of Sarfaraz for questioning his fitness. In his strident remarks against national selectors, batting legend Gavaskar has argued that cricketers come in all shapes and sizes.

If you’re just looking for a slim, slim man, best go to a fashion show and find some other models and give them a bat and ball in their hands and fix them up. That is not the way to play cricket. You have cricketers of all shapes and sizes. Don’t look at the size, look at the score or the wickets. He didn’t stay off the field when he scored a hundred. He’s back on the field again. So what that tells you is the guy is fit,” said Gavaskar India Today.
Gavaskar’s remarks come days after Sarfaraz slammed his third century in the 2023 edition of the Ranji Trophy. The main batter pushed Ajinkya Rahane’s Mumbai-led to 293 in their first half against Delhi at Arun Jaitley Stadium. Legendary cricketer Gavaskar also insists that the Yo-Yo Test can never be the sole selection criterion.
How can you score runs? I think at the end of the day if you’re not fit you’re not going to score hundreds. Cricket fitness is the most important thing. The Yo-Yo test cannot be the only criterion. You have to make sure that the man is also cricket fit. If that person, whoever it is, is fit for cricket then I think that’s fine, added Gavaskar.
