Doja Cat and Kylie Jenner Go Wild at Paris Fashion Week

These days, it seems really innovative red carpet moment few and far between: sure, celebrities are endlessly styled and styled so as to never look perfect, but that’s different than taking mind-blowing risks like this one. Doja’s cat just take in Schiaparelli Dantes’ suture Hell-2023 Paris Fashion Week themed shows.

The pop star and rapper who stole the show pulled up to the red carpet covered in red body paint and 30,000 Swarovski crystals which reportedly took approx five hours to register. She also wore a Schiaparelli ensemble which involved an opaque red bodice, a similar crystal-studded skirt, a long red scarf, and knee-high red boots.

I imagine that Elsa Schiaparelli herself, an intellectual designer who collaborated with avant-garde surreal artists of her day, would have loved this look, Susan Scafidi, academic director of Fordham University’s Institute of Fashion Law, told The Daily Beast. No color is more evocative than red, either referring to Dantes Hell or good luck for the Chinese New Year, and the otherworldly look of nature is perfect for our culture’s current reckoning with regards to reality versus intelligence.

Doja Cat’s look is fantastic, Angharad Coates, an art and design PR executive based between Paris and NYC, told The Daily Beast. This goes hand in hand with Elsa Schiaparelli’s love of surrealism and her drive for artistic envelope, completely in line with the history of the Maison. (I just watched Schiaparelli’s show at the Musee des Arts Dcoratifs, so it’s very fresh!) And as a Leo woman, I love the lion look. Very Aslan-chic.

Writer and cultural critic Juan A. Ramirez disagrees. “I have no skin in the fashion game because it’s boring and has no real charm and nothing represents that more than Kylie Jenner, the epitome you can’t buy style,” Ramirez told The Daily Beast. Is Doja Cats’ appearance just the first of many wild fashion week looks to come? This genre could use a revival, but Coates doesn’t think so. Doja is like old-school Gaga, she says. She’s not indicative of trends because her looks are SO out there. After Gaga’s legendary 2010 MTV VMAs performance, there wasn’t a sudden fad for meat dresses, explains Coates.
